Switzerland Family Reunification Visa (Long-Stay, Type D)

A Switzerland Family Reunification Visa is a Long-Stay National Visa (Type D) for Indian applicants who want to join their family members living in Switzerland for more than 90 days. Typical cases include joining a Swiss spouse, joining a parent with a Swiss residence permit, or dependent children joining parents. The process requires authorization from the competent Cantonal Migration Authority in Switzerland — this underlying approval takes approximately 8–12 weeks before VFS/Embassy can stamp your visa.

🗺️ Step-by-Step Application Process

1

Your Swiss family member initiates with the Cantonal Migration Authority

Typically, your spouse / parent / family member in Switzerland submits a family reunification request at their local Cantonal Migration Office. They need to provide their residence permit, proof of income + accommodation, and the relationship documents from you.

2

Cantonal authority reviews the underlying application

This is the main decision — the Cantonal Migration Authority assesses whether the reunification can be approved. Takes approximately 8–12 weeks. They may request additional documents from either side.

3

Once authorized — you apply for the Type D visa at VFS India

After your Swiss family member receives authorization, you submit the visa application at VFS India with all supporting documents. This is the visa stamping step, not the main decision.

4

Book a VFS appointment

Via the VFS Global Switzerland portal. Select the centre nearest to you.

5

Submit the Type D application at VFS with all documents

Bring originals + photocopies. Biometrics captured on-site. Pay ₹9,600 visa fee + ₹2,690 VFS service charge.

6

VFS forwards to Swiss Embassy for final visa stamping

Takes approximately 15 calendar days (can be longer in peak season). The Embassy issues the Type D entry visa stamped on your passport.

7

Travel to Switzerland and register at the Canton

After arrival, you must register at the local Cantonal Migration Office within 14 days. They'll issue your residence permit (e.g., Permit B) for long-term stay.

💡 Pro Tips

  • Documents like marriage certificates and birth certificates must be apostilled by India's Ministry of External Affairs before submission.
  • The Swiss family member's income and accommodation proof is as important as your documents — weak host financials are a common rejection reason.
  • Start the process early — the underlying Cantonal decision alone takes 8–12 weeks, and document preparation (apostille etc.) can add another 2–4 weeks.
  • Different Cantons have slightly different requirements — confirm with your Swiss family member's local Cantonal Migration Office before gathering documents.
  • Travel medical insurance is mandatory for the initial period — once in Switzerland, enrolling in Swiss health insurance within 3 months is compulsory.
  • If using Path B (via VFS India) — keep copies of everything; the main decision happens at the Cantonal office in Switzerland.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • 1.Swiss family member's income insufficient to support the reunified family
  • 2.Inadequate accommodation (space / size) for the reunified family
  • 3.Missing or improperly apostilled family relationship documents
  • 4.Doubts about the genuineness of the marriage / partnership (particularly for recent marriages)
  • 5.Criminal record / Police Clearance Certificate issues
  • 6.Applicant unable to demonstrate minimum language skills (in some Cantons)

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Family Reunification take overall?+
Approximately 8–12 weeks for the Cantonal Migration Authority's decision on the underlying application, plus ~15 calendar days for VFS/Embassy visa stamping after authorization is granted. Document preparation (apostille, PCC, etc.) in India can add another 2–4 weeks. Plan for a total of 3–4 months end-to-end.
Who submits the application — me or my family member in Switzerland?+
Either way works. Path A: your Swiss family member submits directly at the Cantonal Migration Office in Switzerland (faster in practice, employer-driven in work-based cases). Path B: you submit at VFS India, which forwards to Switzerland for the cantonal decision. Many families use Path A because the Swiss-based family member can physically engage with the cantonal office.
Does my Swiss spouse's income matter?+
Yes — significantly. The Cantonal authority assesses whether your Swiss family member can financially support the reunified family without needing social welfare. Insufficient income is a common rejection reason. Expect them to provide salary slips, tax returns, and proof of stable employment.
Do I need to know German / French / Italian?+
Some Cantons require basic language proficiency for adult family members — typically A1 level in one of Switzerland's official languages (German, French, Italian). Check with your Swiss family member's specific Canton. Children are usually exempt.
Can I work in Switzerland after I arrive on Family Reunification visa?+
Generally yes, once you receive your residence permit from the Cantonal Migration Office after arrival. The type of permit (B, C, etc.) determines your work rights. Confirm specifics with the Canton that will issue your permit.
What is the total cost of the Family Reunification Visa from India?+
At VFS, fees are approximately ₹12,290 (₹9,600 visa fee + ₹2,690 VFS service charge). However, total costs include document apostille fees, PCC, mandatory travel medical insurance (~₹2,000–₹5,000), and translation costs for some documents — budget ₹20,000–₹30,000 total for the Indian-side paperwork.
What happens after I arrive in Switzerland?+
You must register with the Cantonal Migration Office in the place you'll live within 14 days of arrival. They'll issue your residence permit (typically Permit B for family reunification). You'll also need to enroll in Swiss health insurance within 3 months.
Can SureshotVisa help with Family Reunification?+
Yes. We assist with the Indian-side documentation: apostille coordination, Police Clearance Certificate, document verification, cover letter, VFS application + submission. The underlying Cantonal authorization decision is made in Switzerland — your Swiss family member coordinates that directly with their Cantonal authority.
