💡 Pro Tips

  • Long-stay student applications are submitted IN PERSON at the Embassy Delhi only — plan your travel accordingly if you're not in Delhi.
  • Book the Embassy appointment as soon as you have your admission letter — appointments fill up 4–6 weeks in advance during peak season (May–July).
  • Start the apostille process for your academic certificates early — MEA apostille takes 1–2 weeks.
  • Apply at least 3–4 months before your course start date — the Cantonal decision alone takes 8–12 weeks.
  • Your Statement of Purpose (SOP) is critical — it should clearly explain why Switzerland, why your specific program, and your intent to return to India after studies.
  • Swiss universities have strict language requirements — ensure your IELTS/TOEFL/German/French certificate matches what your program demands.
  • Travel medical insurance covers only the initial period — enrolling in Swiss health insurance is compulsory within 3 months of arrival.
  • Some Cantons require a CHF 5,000–10,000 deposit in a Swiss bank account as proof of funds — confirm with your institution.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • 1.Insufficient proof of funds (bank balance below CHF 21,000 / year required)
  • 2.Weak or generic Statement of Purpose — embassy perceives no genuine academic intent
  • 3.Admission letter details don't match your visa application (program, dates, institution)
  • 4.Academic qualifications inadequate for the chosen program level
  • 5.No clear post-study plans — embassy perceives intent to overstay
  • 6.Incomplete apostille on academic certificates
  • 7.Doubts about applicant's language proficiency for the chosen program

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to submit at Embassy Delhi? I'm from Mumbai / Bangalore / Chennai.+
Swiss long-stay Student Visa (Type D) applications are only accepted in person at the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi. VFS centres in other cities handle short-stay visas only. If you're not in Delhi, plan travel + accommodation around your appointment date.
How long does the whole process take?+
Approximately 8–12 weeks once the Embassy forwards your application to the Cantonal Migration Authority, plus 15 calendar days for visa stamping after authorization. Factor in 2–4 more weeks for document apostille beforehand. Plan 3–4 months end-to-end from applying for admission to receiving your visa.
Is the visa fee really free for students?+
Generally yes — the visa fee is waived for students applying for a long-stay student visa. Some exceptions may apply per the Embassy. You'll pay service charges only (if any), apostille fees, travel insurance, and your travel to Delhi.
How much money do I need to prove I have?+
Typically CHF 21,000–25,000 per year of study (covers tuition + living + incidentals). This can come from your own bank account, education loan, sponsor (parents/guardians), or scholarship. Some Cantons additionally require a locked deposit in a Swiss bank account.
Can I work part-time in Switzerland as a student?+
Yes, with conditions. After 6 months of study, you can work up to 15 hours per week during the semester and full-time during holidays. Your specific Cantonal permit determines the exact terms. Work authorization is handled separately from the visa.
What happens after I arrive in Switzerland?+
You must register at the Cantonal Migration Office in your city of study within 14 days of arrival. They issue your Student Residence Permit (usually Permit B, valid for one year and renewable for the full study duration). You also need to enroll in Swiss health insurance within 3 months.
Can I bring my spouse / family with me on a student visa?+
Family reunification for students is possible but limited — generally allowed for PhD students and senior researchers. For Bachelor's / Master's level students, bringing family is usually not permitted. Check with the Cantonal authority at your institution.
