Get admission
Secure an enrolment or admission attestation from a recognized Belgian higher-education institution.
Step 2
Pay the contribution fee
Transfer the €251 'redevance' to the Immigration Office's Belgian account before filing — keep the proof; without it the file is inadmissible.
Step 3
Arrange proof of funds
Blocked-account deposit of 12 × €1,062 with the university, or a legalized Annex 32 sponsor file.
Step 4
Medical + police clearance
Medical certificate from an embassy-approved doctor and an apostilled PCC (issued within 6 months, if 18+).
Step 5
Submit at VFS
Book VFS Global, pay the €250 handling fee + service charge, give biometrics, submit the Visa D file.
Step 6
Decision, travel, register
Collect the D visa, travel, and register at your Belgian commune within 8 working days to get the residence permit.

What is the redevance and why am I paying twice?
The €251 redevance is a separate government contribution for processing your residence application, paid by bank transfer BEFORE filing. The €250 at VFS is the visa handling fee. Both are non-refundable and both are mandatory.
How do I show funds without a sponsor?
Most Belgian universities open a blocked account: you deposit 12 × €1,062 (≈€12,744) and the university transfers it back to you in monthly instalments after arrival — it remains your own living money.
My budget was planned on €835/month — what changed?
Belgium raised the subsistence threshold to €1,062/month net for study-visa applications lodged from 15 August 2026 (academic year 2026-27), including renewals. Files lodged earlier fall under €835.
Can I work part-time in Belgium?
Yes — up to 20 hours/week during term once you hold the student residence permit, and full-time during official academic holidays. Earnings can supplement but not replace your proof of funds.
