Hungary processes Indian applications through TWO offices: the Embassy in New Delhi for north India, and the Consulate General in Mumbai for south & west (Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Cochin, Pune, Goa, Puducherry, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad). Submit to the wrong one and your file is returned without a decision. All applications go via VFS Joint Visa Application Centre.

Hungary's conference category has one rule that trips most Indian delegates: the invitation letter must be issued in Hungarian. An English-only invitation is not accepted for this category, and organisers default to English unless asked. Ask early. The Embassy in New Delhi decides north Indian files and the Consulate General in Mumbai the south and west, each quoting 15 calendar days, and a file arriving with less than 15 days before travel can be returned without a decision. The adult fee is ₹9,600, non-refundable. If you are presenting, attach the abstract acceptance email; the programme should show your role, not just your name.

Visa fees are set by the Embassy of Hungary in INR and are non-refundable regardless of outcome. Children under 6 are visa-fee-exempt; school pupils, students, postgraduates, researchers attending scientific events, family members of EU/EEA citizens, and accompanying teachers may also be visa-fee-exempt — confirm at submission. Diplomatic and service passport holders are exempt from the visa fee. Long-term D visas carry a separate ₹1,920 biometrics service charge on top of the visa fee.

What to gather
Having a document isn't the same as presenting it right — that's the part we handle.
Filled and signed by the applicant. Use the form for your jurisdiction (Mumbai/west zone has its own form).
Color, full-face, no head-dress except religious, taken within the last 6 months.
Validity ≥3 months beyond intended stay, 2 blank pages, issued within the previous 10 years. Front and back side photocopies of the bio-data page also required.
With prior Schengen / other visas — strengthens the file. Failure to provide may result in refusal.
Must include reference to the registration fee receipt; signed and stamped by the host organization. English-only letters are not accepted.

Hotel reservation with deposit / cancellation fee, or invitation letter from Hungarian host (notarized for visiting friends/family). For multi-Schengen trips: lodging proof for each state.

Apply via Hungary if your itinerary spends most time (or has its main purpose) there. If splitting time evenly, apply through the country of first entry.
Identify the right India jurisdiction
South & west India (Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Cochin, Pune, Goa, Puducherry, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad) → Consulate General Mumbai. Rest of India + Bhutan + Nepal → Embassy New Delhi. Wrong jurisdiction = returned without decision.

Gather all required documents
Use the checklist for your visa category. Originals where marked (*), with stamps and signatures from the issuing authority where required. Insurance from a Hungary-Embassy-approved Indian insurer only.
Book your VFS appointment
Visit visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/hun/ — book the slot at your jurisdiction's centre.
Submit at VFS + biometrics + pay fees
Attend in person. Pay visa fee (₹10,100 adult / ₹5,100 child 6–12 / ₹0 child <6) + ₹2,133 service fee. Biometrics taken at the centre unless reusable from a prior Schengen application within 59 months.
Wait for the decision (15 calendar days)
Track via VFS website. The Embassy / Consulate may call you for an interview or request additional documents.
Collect your passport from VFS
Once notified, collect from VFS or use courier (mandatory for south & west zone). Verify visa validity dates and entry type before leaving the counter.
