You can have your grand European city break, or you can have it without the Western-Europe bill. Budapest is where those two wishes stop competing.

Hungary is a full Schengen member, so its Type C tourist visa gives you 90 days in any 180-day period across all 29 Schengen countries. But the reason cost-conscious travellers keep landing on Budapest isn't the visa breadth — it's what a rupee buys once you arrive. A soak in the Széchenyi thermal baths, a night crawling the ruin bars of the Jewish Quarter, a Danube-front walk past the Parliament at dusk: this is a city that photographs like Vienna and spends like a smaller town. What the visa costs, to the rupee

A quiet budget win sits in that table: if you gave Schengen biometrics within the last 59 months, your VFS service fee drops from ₹2,133 to ₹1,600 — a ₹533 saving per person just for having travelled recently. Delhi or Mumbai? Get this right first

Hungary is unusual: it processes Indian applications through two offices, and applying at the wrong one means your file is returned without a decision — the most expensive mistake on this page, because you lose time you may not have.

• Consulate General of Hungary, Mumbai handles south & west India — Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry.
• Embassy of Hungary, New Delhi handles everyone else — north, east, central, and northeast India, plus Bhutan and Nepal.

All submissions still go through a VFS Joint Visa Application Centre, and there's even a separate application form for the Mumbai/west zone — use the one for your jurisdiction. If you're in the south or west, note that courier return isn't optional for you; it's built into the process at ₹675.

Documents, and the deadlines around them

Beyond the passport, form, and correctly-sized photo, a Hungary tourist file needs:

• A cover letter setting out purpose, dates, and itinerary;
• A confirmed return flight reservation and accommodation proof for the whole stay — hotel bookings with deposit or cancellation terms, or a notarised invitation if you're staying with a host;
• Travel medical insurance — €30,000 minimum, Schengen-wide, from a Hungary-Embassy-approved Indian insurer only (a non-approved insurer sinks the file regardless of coverage);
• Original 3-month bank statement, stamped and signed by the bank, plus ITR acknowledgements for the last 2 assessment years;
• Occupation proof — salary slips and a leave letter if employed, business registration if self-employed, pension slips if retired.

On timing: apply at least 15 calendar days before travel and no more than 6 months ahead. Standard processing is 15 calendar days at the deciding office, and files arriving with less than 15 days' lead may be returned without decision. Common refusal reasons read like a checklist of shortcuts: wrong jurisdiction, a non-approved insurer, Hungary not actually the main destination, an unstamped bank statement, a vague itinerary, the wrong photo size, or insufficient lead time. Every one is avoidable before you submit.
