Portugal is strict about timing in a way that catches people: the Consular Section in New Delhi accepts a file only up to 15 working days before the travel date, so a late application is not slow, it is returned. Aim for four to six weeks ahead. The fee is about ₹10,100 for an adult and ₹5,100 for a child of 6 to 12; processing is 15 calendar days from the day the file reaches the Embassy, with up to two working days in transit from VFS. Three refusal patterns from Indian files: insurance under €30,000 or from an unapproved insurer, bank statements that are not original, stamped and on A4, and no leave letter or business proof to show a return.

Visa fee and VFS service charges are non-refundable if the visa is refused or the application is withdrawn while under processing. Refund of the VFS service fee is only considered where the applicant could not attend due to medical reasons (with valid medical proof). All charges can be paid by Cash / Visa / MasterCard / RuPay. The VFS service fee must be pre-paid online before the appointment is confirmed (effective 26 Feb 2020, PAN-India).

4 steps from intake to approval — never as linear as government sites pretend.
1. Complete the online Schengen application form
Fill in and sign all pages of the Portugal Schengen Type C form (free, from vistos.mne.gov.pt). Prepare your documents in the exact order on the Embassy checklist.
2. Book the VFS appointment and pre-pay
Book an appointment at your jurisdiction's VFS Global centre and pre-pay the VFS service fee online — appointments are only confirmed once payment is completed.
3. Submit in person + give biometrics
Attend the VFS centre with your file, pay the visa fee, and provide fingerprints and a photograph. First-time applicants and those whose biometrics are older than 59 months must appear in person.
4. Tracking and decision
Track via the VFS system. A decision is normally taken within 15 calendar days of the file reaching the Embassy (up to 45 days in some cases). Collect the passport by courier or at the VFS centre.

Yes. You must submit an original travel medical insurance policy covering at least €30,000, valid across all Schengen countries for the entire trip, from an approved Indian insurer, with the Travel Health Declaration.
You can lodge up to 6 months before travel and within 3 months of your intended arrival. Apply at least 15 working days before departure — that is the minimum the Embassy accepts. Allow 4–6 weeks to be safe.
Fingerprints are valid for 59 months. If you gave biometrics for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months you may be able to skip them; otherwise you must appear in person at VFS.
No. You must have resided in India for at least the last 6 months. Otherwise you must apply from your country of residence.
Indian residents submit through VFS Global; the file is then forwarded to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi, or the Consulate General of Portugal in Goa for the Goa jurisdiction. Direct Embassy walk-ins are generally not accepted.
