Portugal flag — visa destination D4 Residence Visa (Study — courses over 1 year)

Study in Portugal
from India

Public universities typically €3,000–7,000/year for non-EU international students; some public masters and polytechnics charge less. Applications are filed from India via VFS Global Portugal centres (Embassy of Portugal New Delhi; Consulate General Goa for its jurisdiction) — and everything from admission to the visa appointment can be handled for you, end to end.

Work while studying

Work allowed alongside studies once the AIMA residence permit is issued, as long as it stays compatible with the course; no fixed statutory hour cap — most students work part-time

Intakes

September (main) + February (limited programmes)

Visa processing

Officially 60 days; India files realistically take 60–90 days and can stretch longer — build the buffer in

After you graduate

In-country switch under Art. 122, Law 23/2007 — graduates may stay on to seek work or start a business without leaving Portugal

The money, honestly

What you spend.
What simply stays yours.

Most agents blur these two numbers together. The visa asks you to show funds — that money remains yours to live on in Portugal. What you actually spend on the visa process is far smaller.

You spend

visa process, one-time
  • Visa fee (€110)≈₹12,100
  • VFS service charge≈₹2,000–3,500
  • Travel insurance covering the stay≈₹12,000–25,000
  • PCC + apostille≈₹1,500–4,000
  • Translations/notary (if needed)≈₹2,000–6,000
  • Travel to VFS centre≈₹2,000–6,000
Realistic total≈₹32,000–57,000

Visa process typically under ₹2 lakh

stays your money

≈₹12.1 lakh/year (benchmark)

Benchmark tied to Portugal's minimum wage — €920/month in 2026 ≈ €11,040/year

No blocked account — you evidence means via 12 months of stamped bank statements PLUS ITR-V acknowledgements for the last 3 assessment years. A clean, consistent financial history matters more than a single big balance.

This is proof of funds, not a fee — you live on it in Portugal.

Excludes tuition, the ≈₹12.1 lakh funds benchmark you SHOW (stays your money), flights and living costs; the AIMA residence-permit fee is paid in Portugal after arrival.

Step by step

Admission to boarding,
one clear path.

  1. Step 1

    Get admission

Admission letter from a Portuguese institution for a course longer than one year — shorter courses use a temporary-stay visa, not the D4.

  2. Step 2

    PCC + AIMA consent

Police Clearance Certificate from your Regional Passport Office, apostilled (valid 3 months), plus the signed declaration allowing AIMA to check Portuguese criminal records.

  3. Step 3

    Build the funds file

12 months of bank statements, stamped and signed by the bank, plus ITR-V for the last 3 assessment years — Portugal reads financial history, not a one-day balance.

  4. Step 4

    Insurance + accommodation

Travel insurance of €30,000 (original with QR code) covering the whole stay, and proof of where you will live in Portugal.

  5. Step 5

    Submit at VFS

National visa form (all pages signed), biometrics, €110 fee plus service charge; two white-background photos under 6 months old.

  6. Step 6

    Wait out processing

60–90 days is normal; respond fast if the embassy calls you for an interview or extra documents.

  7. Step 7

    AIMA residence permit in Portugal

Enter on the D4 and attend your AIMA appointment to convert it into the student residence permit — work rights attach to that permit.

Learn from refusals

Why Portugal refuses student files

Weak financial history — 12-month statements and 3 years of ITRs are mandatory; thin accounts or suddenly padded balances fail

Genuine-intent doubts — course unrelated to academic/work background, or a profile that reads as using the D4 as a migration shortcut

Missing apostilled PCC or AIMA consent form, or documents that expire while the long processing runs

Portugal student-visa FAQs

Why does everyone say Portugal visas are slow?

The legal window is 60 days, but files from India routinely take 60–90+ days, and the AIMA residence-permit stage after arrival adds its own wait. Apply the moment you have admission.

Can I work while studying in Portugal?

Yes — once your AIMA residence permit is issued, the law allows work that complements your studies; there is no fixed hour cap in the statute, and most students work part-time.

D4 or temporary-stay visa — which one is mine?

Courses longer than one year use the D4 residence visa. Programmes of a year or less run on a temporary-stay study visa instead — the checklists differ.

What can I do after graduating?

Article 122 of Portugal's immigration law lets graduates switch in-country to a permit to seek work or start a business — no approval is guaranteed, but you don't have to leave Portugal to apply.
