Admission to boarding, one clear path.

    Get admission

    Admission letter from a Portuguese institution for a course longer than one year — shorter courses use a temporary-stay visa, not the D4.

  2. 2

    PCC + AIMA consent

    Police Clearance Certificate from your Regional Passport Office, apostilled (valid 3 months), plus the signed declaration allowing AIMA to check Portuguese criminal records.

  3. 3

    Build the funds file

    12 months of bank statements, stamped and signed by the bank, plus ITR-V for the last 3 assessment years — Portugal reads financial history, not a one-day balance.

  4. 4

    Insurance + accommodation

    Travel insurance of €30,000 (original with QR code) covering the whole stay, and proof of where you will live in Portugal.

    Submit at VFS

    National visa form (all pages signed), biometrics, €110 fee plus service charge; two white-background photos under 6 months old.

The legal window is 60 days, but files from India routinely take 60–90+ days, and the AIMA residence-permit stage after arrival adds its own wait. Apply the moment you have admission.

Can I work while studying in Portugal?

Yes — once your AIMA residence permit is issued, the law allows work that complements your studies; there is no fixed hour cap in the statute, and most students work part-time.

D4 or temporary-stay visa — which one is mine?

Courses longer than one year use the D4 residence visa. Programmes of a year or less run on a temporary-stay study visa instead — the checklists differ.

What can I do after graduating?

Article 122 of Portugal's immigration law lets graduates switch in-country to a permit to seek work or start a business — no approval is guaranteed, but you don't have to leave Portugal to apply.
