The country that rewards taking your time

Some destinations are sprints. Portugal is a long lunch that turns into an evening.

Lisbon's hills, Porto's riverfront cellars, the Algarve's off-season beaches — and, on the same visa, the mid-Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores, which are integral parts of Portugal and fully covered by a Portugal Schengen visa. What gets you there is a Schengen Type C short-stay visa: up to 90 days in any 180-day period, valid across the whole Schengen area, with single, double or multiple entries as the Consulate grants.

Indian residents apply through VFS Global, and the file travels onward to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi — or the Consulate General of Portugal in Goa, for the Goa jurisdiction. That two-step journey shapes the timeline, which is exactly why the slow traveller's habit of planning early is a visa strategy, not just a personality trait. What the visa itself costs — before a single pastel de nata

Two lines are compulsory; the rest are choices. Note the Portugal quirk: the VFS service fee is pre-paid online, and your appointment is only confirmed once it's paid — a PAN-India rule in force since 26 February 2020. Budget it on day one, not at the counter.

All of it is non-refundable if the visa is refused or you withdraw mid-processing — the one exception is the VFS service fee where you couldn't attend for documented medical reasons. Beyond the counter, the checklist quietly adds the slow traveller's usual companions: travel insurance (more below), reservations, photographs, printing. The good news for budgeteers — the flight ticket itself stays unbought. The file needs a round-trip reservation, and a booked ticket does not speed up processing one bit.

A file you can assemble over two relaxed weekends

Weekend one — the money story

Portugal reads your finances the way you'd read a menu: looking for consistency. You need original personal bank statements for the last 3 months — on A4, stamped and signed by the bank, not a home printout — and your ITR for the last 2 assessment years (only the ITR-V / Acknowledgement form is accepted). If you're employed, add three months of salary slips, the matching salary-account statements, and a leave-approval letter on letterhead. Self-employed travellers bring GST or business registration, plus business and personal statements and both ITRs. The old checklist wisdom of roughly €40 a day of documented funds, plus a €75 entry threshold, remains a sensible budgeting yardstick — a slow four-week trip needs a visibly healthier balance than a ten-day dash.

Weekend two — the trip story

A signed Schengen Type C form (free from vistos.mne.gov.pt), a personal cover letter explaining the plan and the transport, the round-trip reservation, and accommodation proof for the entire stay — hotels, holiday rentals or a package confirmation. The two documents people get wrong

Insurance: the ORIGINAL policy, minimum €30,000 cover, all risks including repatriation, valid across Schengen for the full trip including arrival and departure days, from an approved Indian insurer — submitted with the Travel Health Declaration. Photos: two, 35–40 mm wide on a white background, under six months old — one pasted on the form, one clipped (never stapled) to the passport. And if you fall under the Goa jurisdiction, no eyewear in the photo at all.

Slow travel, but early paperwork

The clock is the least relaxed part of this visa, so give it respect. The Consular Section takes 15 calendar days from the day your file reaches it — and the file first spends up to 2 working days travelling from VFS to the Embassy. In cases needing extra scrutiny, that stretches to 45 calendar days. Meanwhile, files are accepted no later than 15 working days before your travel date, and no earlier than 6 months out (within 3 months of your arrival date, per the lodging rules).

The sweet spot, in our experience and the checklist's own advice: 4–6 weeks before departure. That absorbs a scrutiny extension without drama and keeps your reservations from going stale. Biometrics are captured in person at the VFS centre — twelve of them handle Portugal, from New Delhi, Chandigarh and Jalandhar to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi and Goa — though fingerprints given for any Schengen visa within the last 59 months may spare you a repeat performance.

Then the pleasant kind of waiting: track the file online, and collect the passport at the centre or by courier. A decision within 15 days is the norm, not the exception, for clean files.
