The money, honestly

What you spend.
What simply stays yours.

Most agents blur these two numbers together. The visa asks you to show funds — that money remains yours to live on in Hungary. What you actually spend on the visa process is far smaller.

You spend

visa process, one-time

  • VFS service charge≈₹1,500–2,500
  • Health insurance for the first year≈₹10,000–20,000
  • Apostille (birth certificate + school certificates) and notarisations≈₹8,000–15,000

No official INR threshold; ≈₹44,000–66,000/month of living cost credibly evidenced (planning figure, not a government number)

No fixed official figure — you must show 'sufficient resources' for subsistence, accommodation, healthcare and return travel; living costs in Hungary run ≈€400–600/month as a planning ballpark

Sponsor's or own bank statements for the last 6 months + signed declaration of financial support + relationship proof, or a scholarship certificate (e.g. Stipendium Hungaricum) — the balance stays in the account, nothing is deposited with the government

This is proof of funds, not a fee — you live on it in Hungary.

Excludes tuition (≈€1,500–5,000/year unless on Stipendium Hungaricum), the living funds you evidence (which stay in the account), flights and living costs; insurance figure is a market estimate.

Step by step

Admission to boarding,
one clear path.

  1. Step 1

    Secure admission and pay tuition

The admission certificate from the Hungarian institution is the anchor document; keep the tuition-payment receipt — it's a mandatory enclosure (Stipendium winners attach the scholarship certificate instead).

  2. Step 2

    Build the document file

Apostilled birth certificate and latest school certificates, police clearance, CV, signed motivation letter, and the voluntary-exit declaration required by the checklist.

  3. Step 3

    Prove subsistence, housing and healthcare

Sponsor's 6-month bank statements + support declaration + relationship proof; dormitory letter or lease; insurance policy or funds covering healthcare.

  4. Step 4

Submit at the VFS Joint Visa Application Centre

Originals only, one photocopy set, €110 fee; a consular interview about your study plans is possible.

  5. Step 5

    Wait for the OIF decision

Statutory limit is 60 days; deficiency letters pause the clock, so answer any document request fast.

  6. Step 6

Enter on the D visa and collect your residence card

On approval you get an entry visa, then collect the residence card in Hungary; the study permit runs 1–3 years and is extendable for the course length.

Learn from refusals

Why Hungary refuses student files

Study purpose not credible — generic motivation letter, course-profile mismatch, or weak consular interview

Subsistence not proven — thin or irregular sponsor statements, or missing support declaration/relationship proof

Incomplete file — missing apostilles, tuition-payment proof, accommodation evidence or healthcare coverage

Hungary student-visa FAQs

What is Stipendium Hungaricum and does it skip the visa?

It's the Hungarian government's fully-funded scholarship — tuition waiver, monthly stipend, housing support and insurance — with applications closing around mid-January. Winners still apply for the same study residence permit; the scholarship certificate simply replaces tuition and funds proofs.

How many hours can students work in Hungary?

Up to 30 hours per week during the study term, and full-time for up to 90 days a year outside the term — that's the current official rule for study-permit holders.

How much bank balance does Hungary want?

Hungary publishes no fixed amount — the file must show 'sufficient resources' for living, housing, healthcare and return travel, usually via a sponsor's 6-month statements plus a support declaration. The money is evidence, not a payment.

Can I stay in Hungary after my course ends?

Graduates holding a valid study permit can apply for a residence permit for job-searching or entrepreneurship, valid up to 9 months. That is the factual option — it is not a work guarantee or a PR promise.
