The money, honestly

What you spend.
What simply stays yours.

Most agents blur these two numbers together. The visa asks you to show funds — that money remains yours to live on in Canada. What you actually spend on the visa process is far smaller.

You spend

CAD 22,895/year living costs (single, outside Quebec, effective Sept 2025) + first-year tuition + travel

GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) is the most common route; bank funds or an education-loan sanction letter also accepted. IRCC revises the threshold each September.

This is proof of funds, not a fee — you live on it in Canada.

Excludes first-year tuition, the CAD 22,895 GIC deposit (that money stays yours and funds your living costs), IELTS/PTE test fees, flights and living costs.

Step by step

Admission to boarding,
one clear path.

  1. Step 1

    Get your LOA

Secure admission and a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

  2. Step 2

    Obtain the PAL/TAL

Your institution arranges the Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter — mandatory under the study-permit cap.

  3. Step 3

    Arrange funds

Buy a GIC of CAD 22,895 and pay first-year tuition — both remain your money and strengthen the file.

  4. Step 4

    Upfront medical

Complete an e-Medical with an IRCC panel physician before applying.

  5. Step 5

    Apply online

Submit forms, study plan/SOP and documents on your IRCC account; pay CAD 235 total fees.

  6. Step 6

    Give biometrics

Fingerprints and photo at a VFS VAC within 30 days of the biometric instruction letter.

  7. Step 7

    Decision

Approval comes as a Port of Entry Letter of Introduction; the permit itself is printed when you land in Canada.

Canada student-visa FAQs

Is Canada's SDS fast-track still open?

No — SDS closed on 8 Nov 2024. All Indian applicants now use the regular stream; a GIC plus paid tuition still makes a stronger file.

Do I lose the CAD 22,895 GIC money?

No. The GIC is your own deposit — it is released back to you in monthly instalments for living costs after you arrive in Canada.

How many hours can I work while studying?

24 hours/week off-campus during classes and full-time during scheduled breaks, provided your permit carries work conditions.

Can my spouse get a work permit?

Only if you study in a masters programme of 16+ months, a doctoral programme, or select professional degrees — spousal open work permits were tightened in 2024–25.
