Get your admission letter
Apply via uni-assist or directly; the Zulassungsbescheid (admission) or conditional offer is what the visa file is built on.

Obtain the APS certificate
Mandatory for Indian applicants — APS India verifies your academic documents (fee ₹18,000). Apply early; it takes weeks and the visa cannot be filed without it.

Open the blocked account + insurance
Deposit €11,904 with a licensed provider and arrange travel/health insurance covering you until university enrolment.

Apply on the Consular Services Portal
Fill the online application at digital.diplo.de and upload all documents for digital pre-screening by the mission.

VFS appointment — biometrics + originals
Once your digital file is cleared, book the VFS Global appointment, submit originals, give biometrics and pay the €75 fee.

Decision, travel and residence permit
Visa is stamped after approval. In Germany, register your address and convert the visa into a student residence permit at the local Ausländerbehörde.

Germany universities and what they charge you

Tuition is a state matter in Germany, so it varies inside the country rather than nationally. Most states charge non-EU students nothing beyond a semester contribution; Baden-Wuerttemberg charges EUR 1,500 a semester, TUM sets its own master's fees, and Bavaria has legislated fees that begin in 2027.

Does the €11,904 blocked account money get spent?
No — it remains your own money. It sits in your blocked account and is released back to you at up to €992/month in Germany to live on. It is proof of funds, not a fee.
Is the APS certificate really compulsory?
Yes, for Indian students it has been mandatory since November 2022. No APS certificate, no visa appointment. Fee is ₹18,000 and it takes weeks — start it alongside your university applications.
Can I study in Germany without German language?
Yes — hundreds of Master's and a growing number of Bachelor's programmes are fully English-taught (IELTS/TOEFL accepted). German helps for part-time jobs and daily life, and some courses require it.
How much can I earn part-time?
You may work 140 full days or 280 half days a year. At the 2026 minimum wage rates, students commonly earn roughly €520–€1,000+/month within the permitted limits — enough to help, not enough to replace proof of funds.
