Study in Italy
from India
Public universities charge ≈€500–4,000/year based on family income (ISEE); DSU regional scholarships can cut fees further and add a stipend — among Europe's cheapest degrees. Applications are filed from India via VFS Global Italy visa centres (under Embassy of Italy New Delhi / Consulates in Mumbai & Kolkata, by jurisdiction) — and everything from admission to the visa appointment can be handled for you, end to end.
Work while studying
Up to 20 h/week (1,040 h/year cap) on the student residence permit
Intakes
September/October (main); a few programmes in February
Visa processing
Typically 2–4 weeks in student season; legal limit is 90 days — file as soon as your Universitaly enrolment is validated
After you graduate
Permesso per attesa occupazione — 12-month job-seeker permit for graduates of recognised Italian degrees (non-renewable)
The money, honestly
What you spend.
What simply stays yours.
Most agents blur these two numbers together. The visa asks you to show funds — that money remains yours to live on in Italy. What you actually spend on the visa process is far smaller.
You spend
visa process, one-time- Visa fee (€50)≈₹4,500
- VFS service charge≈₹1,500–2,600
- Medical insurance, 1st year (€30k + repatriation)≈₹12,000–25,000
- HRD attestation + MEA apostille + notary/translations≈₹4,000–10,000
- DoV/CIMEA certificate (if required, €150–300)≈₹14,000–27,000
- Travel to VFS centre≈₹2,000–6,000
Visa process typically under ₹2 lakh

You show
stays your money≈₹11.2 lakh/year
€783.06/month for 13 months = €10,179.85/year (MUR/MAECI circular for a.y. 2026/27 and 2027/28)
Own bank funds, a disbursed education loan (must be visible in your statement), or a scholarship. From a.y. 2026/27 the guarantee may come from you personally or from relatives up to the fourth degree of kinship, or from Italian institutions of established credit including universities. The funds must be lawful and traceable — the consulate checks where the money came from, not just the balance. Sponsor files need 3 years' ITR-V + 6-month bank statements.
This is proof of funds, not a fee — you live on it in Italy.
Excludes tuition/enrolment fee (which must be PAID before the visa — the receipt is mandatory), the ≈₹11.2 lakh maintenance funds you SHOW (that money stays yours to live on), flights and living costs.
Step by step
Admission to boarding,
one clear path.
Step 1
Get admission + pre-enrol on Universitaly
Your Italian university must validate your pre-enrolment on the government's Universitaly portal — the embassy will not accept your file without it.
Step 2
Apostille your academics
Original study certificates need HRD attestation + MEA apostille (SDM attestation is explicitly rejected). Get a DoV or CIMEA certificate if your university requires one.
Step 3
Pay enrolment fees + arrange funds
Receipt of full enrolment-fee payment is mandatory at submission. Line up proof of ≈€783/month for 13 months (€10,179.85) via your own funds, a family guarantee, a disbursed loan, or a scholarship.
Step 4
Insurance + accommodation
€30,000 medical insurance with a repatriation clause, plus boarding/lodging proof for the whole stay (university housing, rent agreement, or hotel).
Step 5
Submit at the VFS centre
Book the appointment, pay €50 + service charge, give biometrics, and show all originals in person.
Step 6
Decision + travel
Track the file; most student decisions land within weeks though the legal window is 90 days.
Step 7
Permesso di soggiorno within 8 days
After landing, apply for the residence permit at an Italian post office within 8 working days — the receipt keeps you legal while it processes.

Learn from refusals
Why Italy refuses student files
Academic certificates not HRD-attested and MEA-apostilled — SDM attestation is rejected outright
Funds shown through ineligible sponsors (only parents count) or an education loan that was never actually disbursed into the account
Course-language mismatch — no credible B2 proof for the language of instruction, triggering study-intent doubts

Italy student-visa FAQs
Is IELTS mandatory for the Italy student visa?
If your course is taught in English, the embassy asks for B2-level proof — IELTS/TOEFL preferred. Italian-taught courses need B2 Italian instead. Match the certificate to the course language.
Can my uncle or elder brother sponsor me?
Under the 2026/27 circular the guarantee can come from you or from relatives up to the fourth degree of kinship — so a brother or an uncle can qualify, unlike the older parents-only reading. Friends and unrelated third parties still do not count, and the consulate must be able to trace where the money came from.
What is Universitaly and why does it matter?
It is Italy's official pre-enrolment portal. Your university validates your application there, and the embassy accepts your visa file only with that confirmation.
Is studying in Italy really almost free?
Public tuition is income-linked (≈€500–4,000/year) and DSU scholarships can cover fees plus a stipend — but from a.y. 2026/27 you must still SHOW €10,179.85/year in maintenance funds; that money remains yours to live on.
