Study in Luxembourg
from India
University of Luxembourg: €400/semester for the first two semesters, €200/semester after (≈₹18,000–36,000/yr); a few specialized master's programs charge more. Applications are filed from India via Luxembourg Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) in India — applications must be lodged there and are forwarded to the Embassy of Luxembourg, New Delhi; only after the Immigration Directorate in Luxembourg approves your temporary authorisation to stay — and everything from admission to the visa appointment can be handled for you, end to end.
Work while studying
Average 15 hrs/week over a month during term; no limit during official holidays; restriction doesn't apply to PhD researchers or uni.lu student-assistant jobs
Intakes
September (winter semester, main) + February (summer semester, limited programs)
Visa processing
Authorisation to stay: allow up to ~3 months (often faster); D visa via the VFS Global centre to the Embassy in New Delhi: no statutory deadline — the embassy advises submitting at least 25–30 working days before departure
After you graduate
Residence permit for private reasons ('job search or business creation'): valid 12 months after graduation (master's graduates and PhD holders; the follow-on work permit must relate to your field)
The money, honestly
What you spend.
What simply stays yours.
Most agents blur these two numbers together. The visa asks you to show funds — that money remains yours to live on in Luxembourg. What you actually spend on the visa process is far smaller.

Learn from refusals
Why Luxembourg refuses student files
Filing the D visa without an approved authorisation to stay — the embassy cannot issue the visa without the original approval
Financial resources below the 80%-of-REVIS threshold, or funds not in your own name/unexplained
Doubts about enrolment or genuine study purpose (non-recognized course, inconsistent academic history)

Luxembourg student-visa FAQs
Why are there two approvals before I fly?
Luxembourg decides your case first: the Immigration Directorate in Luxembourg issues a temporary authorisation to stay. The D visa is the second, quicker step — but there is no statutory deadline; the embassy advises allowing 25–30 working days once the authorisation exists.
The funds figure looks high — do I pay it to anyone?
No. You show roughly 80% of Luxembourg's REVIS — €1,555.52/month under the rates in force from 1 June 2026, and it is re-indexed — in your own account or via a scholarship. It remains your money to live on; Luxembourg rents make most of it necessary anyway.
Is studying in Luxembourg really that cheap?
Tuition is — €200–400 per semester at the University of Luxembourg for most programs. The real cost is living: budget realistically for rent, which is among the highest in Europe.
Can I stay after graduating?
Yes — a 12-month residence permit for private reasons to seek a job or start a business linked to your studies. It is a factual stay option, not a job or settlement guarantee.
