Sweden flag — visa destination Residence Permit for Studies in Higher Education

Study in Sweden
from India

Not free for Indians — non-EU tuition is typically SEK 80,000–295,000/year (≈₹7.2–26.5 lakh), most programmes ~SEK 100,000–160,000; first instalment must be paid before the permit is decided. Applications are filed from India via Online at migrationsverket.se; biometrics and permit-card matters at the Embassy of Sweden, New Delhi (walk-in, weekday mornings — no VFS for residence permits) — and everything from admission to the visa appointment can be handled for you, end to end.

The money, honestly

What you spend.
What simply stays yours.

Most agents blur these two numbers together. The visa asks you to show funds — that money remains yours to live on in Sweden. What you actually spend on the visa process is far smaller.

You spend

visa process, one-time
  • Migrationsverket fee (SEK 1,500)≈₹13,500
  • Trip to the Embassy of Sweden, New Delhi (biometrics)≈₹3,000–15,000
  • Health insurance if programme <1 year (often free via university FAS+ cover)₹0–15,000

Realistic total≈₹18,000–45,000

SEK 10,656/month (2026 applications), shown for the whole permit period — typically 10 months/academic year ≈ SEK 106,560

Balance in the student's OWN bank account (or scholarship/education-loan sanction); reduced if the university provides free food (−SEK 2,960/mo) or housing (−SEK 4,736/mo). No blocked account — the money stays yours

This is proof of funds, not a fee — you live on it in Sweden.

Step by step

Admission to boarding,
one clear path.

  1. Step 1

    Get admitted via universityadmissions.se

One national portal for all Swedish universities; mid-January deadline for the autumn intake.

  2. Step 2

    Pay the first tuition instalment

Migrationsverket will not grant the permit until the university confirms payment.

  3. Step 3

    Apply online to Migrationsverket

Pay SEK 1,500, upload passport, funds proof, insurance (if programme <1 year) and admission decision.

  4. Step 4

Give biometrics at the Swedish Embassy, New Delhi

Walk-in weekday mornings (08:30–10:30), no appointment needed — photo and fingerprints for the residence permit card.

  5. Step 5

    Decision and card

After approval the card takes ~4 weeks to be produced and sent to the embassy for collection.

  6. Step 6

    Travel and register

Programmes of 1 year or more: register for a personnummer, which brings public healthcare access.

Learn from refusals

Why Sweden refuses student files

Funds below SEK 10,656/month for every month of the permit period, or the money sitting in a parent's account instead of the student's own name

Missing comprehensive health insurance for programmes under one year

Short passport validity leading to a shortened or refused permit (and, on extensions from 2026, insufficient academic progress)

Sweden student-visa FAQs

Can I still work unlimited hours in Sweden?

Not on new permits. From 11 June 2026 students may work at most 15 hours/week during semesters, with unlimited work only in June–August. Permits granted before that date keep the old rule until they are extended.

Is there a blocked account like Germany?

No. You show SEK 10,656/month in your own bank account (or a scholarship/loan). Nothing is deposited with the government — the money remains yours to live on.

Do I get free healthcare?

Programmes of 1 year or more give you a personnummer and access to public healthcare. Shorter programmes require comprehensive private insurance for the permit itself.

Can I stay back after my degree?

You can apply for a residence permit of up to 12 months to seek employment after completing your studies, funded from your own means. It is a search period, not a job or PR guarantee.
