Is the Swiss student visa really free?
Yes — per the Embassy of Switzerland's own India checklist, the national D visa for students is free of charge (a fee applies only in special cases such as Post-Doc). Your real costs are documentation and travel to the embassy.
Why does it take 8–12 weeks?
The embassy doesn't decide your file — the migration office of your canton in Switzerland does. The embassy can only issue the visa after the canton sends its authorisation, so apply the moment you have admission.
Can I work part-time from day one?
No. Non-EU students cannot work at all for the first 6 months. After that, 15 hrs/week during term and full-time in official breaks, with employer authorisation. Budget as if you'll earn nothing in year one.
Do I have to promise to leave Switzerland?
Your cover letter must confirm you will leave after your studies — that's an entry-visa requirement. Separately, Swiss law does give graduates a 6-month permit to look for work in their field; both facts coexist.
