Italy Tourist Visa 2026: Which Consulate Owns Your State?
Last reviewed: 15 July 2026 · Verified against current VFS Global India fees
Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Bengaluru? Your state of residence — not your passport — decides which Italian mission rules on your 2026 tourist visa file.

Four Italian missions, one India: the map of who owns your state.
Italy does not read your application in one place. It reads it in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Bengaluru — depending on where you live, not where your passport was issued. This is the reference map we keep pinned above the desk.
Residence decides. The passport's place of issue does not.
Every Italy jurisdiction question we have ever been asked resolves to one sentence: the Italian mission that decides your tourist visa is the one responsible for the state where you currently reside.
Not the city on your passport's first page. Not the office that printed it. A passport issued in Kochi belongs, for visa purposes, to whichever mission covers the state its holder now lives in. If that holder has spent the last three years working in Gurugram, the file is an Embassy of Italy, New Delhi file — and it will be judged against the New Delhi checklist.
That last clause matters more than it looks. Italy maintains one embassy and three consulates general in India, and the checklists between them differ slightly. A document set assembled from a Mumbai-jurisdiction blog post can arrive at a New Delhi decision desk with small, avoidable gaps. Our full Italy tourist visa guide follows the New Delhi checklist, because that is the jurisdiction most of our clients live in.
One more residence rule sits underneath this one: you must have lived in the country of application continuously for the last 6 months, with proof. The Embassy cannot process files from visitors to India — including Indian nationals who actually live abroad and are home for a wedding.
The Embassy of Italy, New Delhi: nine names on the plate
The Embassy's tourist-visa jurisdiction — the North — is published as an exact list. If your state of residence appears below, your file is decided in New Delhi. No exceptions, no preferences.
| # | State / territory of residence | Deciding mission |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | National Capital Territory of Delhi | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
| 2 | Haryana | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
| 3 | Himachal Pradesh | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
| 4 | Jammu & Kashmir | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
| 5 | Punjab | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
| 6 | Rajasthan | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
| 7 | Uttar Pradesh | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
| 8 | Uttarakhand | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
| 9 | Chandigarh | Embassy of Italy, New Delhi |
Readers in Punjab, note the pairing: your deciding mission is New Delhi, but your submission counter is almost certainly closer — Jalandhar or Chandigarh. The distinction between the two is the subject of Plate IV.
Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru — the consulates general
Residents of states outside the nine above are served by one of three Consulates General: Mumbai for the West, Kolkata for the East, Bengaluru for the South. Each runs its own decision desk and its own slightly-different checklist.
We will not print an invented state-by-state allocation for those three zones — a gazetteer that guesses is worse than no gazetteer. The authoritative mapping is displayed during appointment booking on the official VFS Italy portal (visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/ita/), and the correct consulate is confirmed before you pay a rupee. What we can chart precisely is where the counters are.
| Centre | Zone notes |
|---|---|
| VFS Italy New Delhi | North jurisdiction — primary counter for Embassy files |
| VFS Italy Jalandhar | North jurisdiction counter — the Punjab workhorse |
| VFS Italy Chandigarh | North jurisdiction counter |
| VFS Italy Mumbai | West jurisdiction — Consulate General of Italy, Mumbai |
| VFS Italy Kolkata | East jurisdiction — Consulate General of Italy, Kolkata |
| VFS Italy Bengaluru | South jurisdiction — Consulate General of Italy, Bengaluru |
| VFS Italy Chennai | Counter city — jurisdiction confirmed at booking |
| VFS Italy Hyderabad | Counter city — jurisdiction confirmed at booking |
| VFS Italy Pune | Counter city — jurisdiction confirmed at booking |
| VFS Italy Ahmedabad | Counter city — jurisdiction confirmed at booking |

VFS takes the file. The mission decides it.
The commonest map-reading error is to confuse the two layers. VFS Global is the counter — it books the appointment, captures your biometrics, collects the fee, and couriers the sealed file onward. The Embassy or Consulate is the court — it alone examines the file, calls an interview if it wishes, and issues or refuses the visa.
So an applicant living in Amritsar hands documents to a VFS officer in Jalandhar, and the decision is signed in New Delhi. The counter city changes your travel time; it never changes your judge. That is also why "which VFS centre is fastest?" is the wrong question — the clock that matters runs at the mission, and it runs at the same speed for every counter in its zone.
Two counter-level rules from the New Delhi checklist are worth engraving here, because VFS applies them before the file even ships. First: the application form — filled online at the VFS Italy portal, printed back-to-back, and signed, one form per applicant. Second: the phone number on that form must be your own working number, not an agent's. The Embassy reserves the right to verify, and a file carrying a consultant's number can be judged incomplete. It is the single cheapest refusal in this entire gazetteer, and we see it every season.
What every zone charges, and how long every zone takes
Whichever mission owns your state, the tariff and the timetable are uniform. The fee is set in euros and converted at the Embassy's rate, so the rupee figures are approximate.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Schengen visa fee — adult€90, ≈ ₹9,630 at the Embassy exchange rate | €90 |
| Children 6–12 years€45, ≈ ₹4,820 | €45 |
| Children under 6 | FREE |
| VFS service chargePer applicant, inclusive of all taxes — notably lean by Schengen standards | ₹631 |
| Optional — courier facility | ₹795 |
| Optional — courier assurance | ₹631 |
| Optional — premium lounge | ₹4,669 |
Every fee above is non-refundable if the Embassy refuses the file or you withdraw it mid-processing. Payment is accepted in cash at VFS or by demand draft in favour of "VFS GLOBAL SERVICES PRIVATE LIMITED" — one banking instrument per applicant. For your family's exact total, the Italy visa cost calculator does the arithmetic.
The clock: 15 working days from submission, extendable to 45 when the Embassy wants a longer look. The application window opens 180 working days before departure and closes 15 working days before it. Our standing advice is 3–4 weeks ahead — early enough to absorb an extension, late enough that your bookings still look real. And note the Embassy's reserved right to call any applicant for a personal interview; it is not routine, but it is on the books.
Marginalia for the North file
Compiled from the New Delhi checklist and from the files that come back to us for repair:
- Bank statements — personal, six months, stamped. The Embassy wants your personal account, not the business current account, with the branch's stamp and signature. Unstamped net-banking printouts are a recurring refusal ground.
- Three years of ITR, with barcode, plus challan receipts. Two years satisfies many Schengen desks; the Italy New Delhi checklist asks for three, and thin tax history reads as weak ties.
- Insurance from the approved list only. Minimum €30,000, valid Schengen-wide, from an approved Indian insurer on the current VFS Italy list. A ₹30-lakh-cover policy from a non-approved provider still fails. Say it in your cover letter too — insurer, policy number, cover.
- The photograph: 3.5 × 4.5 cm, white or light background, under six months old, 80% face, non-smiling — and stuck, never stapled, to the form.
- Indian civil documents need MEA apostille — birth, marriage and relationship certificates travelling with the file.
- Holding an invitation letter? Wrong category. Tourism files with an EU or resident host's invitation inside are refused for category mismatch — that itinerary belongs under the visit-family route, not tourism.
The jurisdiction questions, answered for the record
Which Italian consulate handles my state's tourist visa application?
Residents of Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh fall under the Embassy of Italy, New Delhi. Other states are served by the Consulates General in Mumbai (West), Kolkata (East) or Bengaluru (South). The exact allocation for your state is confirmed on the VFS Italy portal when you book.
Does my passport's place of issue decide my Italy visa jurisdiction?
No. Jurisdiction follows your state of residence, not where the passport was issued. A Kochi-issued passport held by a Gurugram resident is a New Delhi file. You should be ready to prove that residence, and you must have lived in India continuously for the last six months to apply here at all.
Can I submit my Italy visa file at any VFS centre in India?
You submit at a VFS centre serving your jurisdiction — North-zone residents use New Delhi, Jalandhar or Chandigarh, for example. The counter only collects the file and biometrics; the decision is always made by your zone's embassy or consulate. Choosing a counter in another city does not move your file to a different judge.
What happens if I prepare documents for the wrong Italian jurisdiction?
The checklists of the four missions differ slightly, so a file built from another zone's list can arrive with gaps — a missing ITR year, an unstamped statement. The Embassy can judge such a file incomplete or refuse it, and every fee paid is non-refundable. Build from the checklist of the mission that will actually decide your file.
How much does the Italy tourist visa cost from India in 2026?
The consular fee is €90 for adults (≈ ₹9,630 at the Embassy rate) and €45 (≈ ₹4,820) for children aged 6–12; children under 6 pay nothing. The VFS service charge is ₹631 per applicant, with optional courier (₹795), courier assurance (₹631) and premium lounge (₹4,669). All of it is non-refundable whatever the decision.
How long does the Italy tourist visa take to process?
Standard processing is 15 working days from submission at VFS, extendable up to 45 days if the Embassy requires further scrutiny. You may apply between 15 and 180 working days before departure. Filing 3–4 weeks ahead is the sensible middle.
Do I need to attend an interview at the Embassy of Italy?
Not by default — most tourist files are decided on paper. The Embassy reserves the right to call any applicant for a personal interview or to ask for additional documents beyond the published checklist. Treat it as a possibility to be ready for, not a step to schedule.
I moved to a different state recently — where do I apply for my Italy visa?
You apply under the jurisdiction of the state where you now genuinely reside, and you should carry proof of that residence. Remember the companion rule: you must have lived in the country of application continuously for the last six months. If the move is very fresh, discuss the file before booking — evidence, not intention, decides it.
