- A valid student residence permit allows employee work up to 60% of full-time without a separate work permit, with full-time work between academic terms. Self-employment is prohibited. First-time applicants must wait until their permit is issued before starting work.

Get admission from an Icelandic university
University of Iceland's non-EU deadline is 1 February for the autumn intake; private universities have their own dates.

Assemble the paper file
Printed signed form, passport copy, photo, enrolment confirmation, funds proof, Iceland-valid health insurance, apostilled police clearance.

Pay ISK 70,000 and courier the file to Iceland
Send the originals and payment receipt to the Directorate of Immigration (Dalvegur 18, Kópavogur). Its published preparation deadlines are 1 May for autumn and 1 October for spring.

Respond quickly to any document requests; incomplete files are the main cause of delay.

Collect the entry D-visa in India
On approval, the Directorate sends a D-visa authorisation to the Embassy of Iceland, New Delhi — lodge your passport through a VFS Global centre for the entry visa.

Travel and complete formalities in Iceland
Complete the Directorate's arrival formalities, including the photograph, housing certificate and any required medical examination. Wait for the student residence permit to be issued before starting employee work; a separate student work permit is no longer required.

Is studying in Iceland really tuition-free?
Check your institution and intake. The University of Iceland says autumn 2026 starters are not charged tuition, but annual registration is ISK 100,000 and non-EEA application processing is ISK 20,000. It says non-EEA tuition is authorised from autumn 2027, with programme amounts still to be decided. A blanket tuition-free promise would be misleading.
Can I apply online from India?
No. First-time student permits are paper applications posted or couriered to the Directorate of Immigration in Iceland; many students have the university or a representative submit the file.
How do I actually enter Iceland after approval?
