Step 1
Get admission from an MFHEA-registered institution
The enrolment letter must state the MFHEA-registered name, exact course title, MQF level, ECTS, duration, weekly contact hours and lecture address — incomplete letters stall files.
Step 2
Book VFS at least 9 weeks early
Identità's checklist makes the 9-weeks-before-course-start rule explicit; the VFS appointment letter itself is a required document.
Step 3
Prepare the funds pack
3-month bank statement + bank certificate showing at least 75% of minimum wage per study month (≈€745/month), or the full sponsor pack (statement, declaration, ID).
Step 4
Insurance, flights, first 14 nights
€30,000 study-valid insurance (≥91 consecutive days for MQF 5+), full flight itinerary arriving no more than 2 weeks before the course, and accommodation in your own name for the first 14 nights.
Step 5
Submit at VFS
Pay €100 by card, give biometrics, submit everything in English (or via Identità's authorised translators only).
Step 6
Decision by the Central Visa Unit
Typically 4–8 weeks; all official communication comes by email — a typo in your email address can sink the file.
Step 7
Residence permit in Malta
For courses over 90 days, apply for the study residence permit after arrival — the Jobsplus work permit is issued with it, and students on MQRIC-recognised higher courses can work from year one (others only after 3 months in Malta).
