Austria Tourist Visa from India 2026: The Practical Brief

What this visa is, in four lines

The Austria tourist visa is a Schengen short-stay Type C visa for Indian passport holders visiting Austria for tourism, sightseeing, or leisure. It allows a stay of 90 days in any 180-day period, valid across all 29 Schengen countries. It is issued as single or multiple entry, at the Embassy's discretion. And it cannot be extended inside Austria except in genuine force majeure — plan the trip inside the allowance.

One structural rule before anything else: apply through Austria only if Austria is your main destination — the country where you book the most nights. An itinerary that names Austria as the main destination while the hotel bookings say otherwise is on the Embassy's published list of refusal patterns. The fee table, as charged in 2026

The approved-insurer rule — new for 2026

This is the single most important change on the Austria file this year. From 1 January 2026, Austria accepts travel medical insurance only from approved Indian insurance companies — the current list is published on the VFS Austria site. A policy from an insurer not on that list makes the file incomplete, whatever its coverage.

The coverage requirements themselves are unchanged, and they are checked line by line:

• Minimum cover of €30,000;
• Valid throughout all Schengen member states, not just Austria;
• Covering the entire period of stay — arrival day to departure day;
• Including COVID-19 treatment.

Deadlines and processing, in calendar terms

Note the unit: Austria counts working days, not calendar days, and the clock starts only when the Embassy in New Delhi has the file — not when you hand it to VFS. If you submit at a centre outside Delhi, the courier leg comes first.

Where you actually file, and how

Austria files are submitted at 11 VFS Global centres: New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, and Jaipur. Biometrics — fingerprints and a facial photo — are captured in person, so somebody in your travelling party is making a trip to one of these cities. All files are decided by the Austrian Embassy, New Delhi.

The mechanical sequence, condensed:

1. Download the Editable Visa Application Form (the preferred digital version) and the Declaration and Undertaking from the VFS Austria downloads page — both are mandatory, filled in English or German, and signed.
2. Book the biometrics appointment at visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/aut/.
3. Submit originals plus copies at VFS, give biometrics, pay the Embassy fee and VFS charge.
4. VFS transports the file to the Embassy; processing begins on receipt.
5. Decision arrives by SMS/email; collect the passport at VFS or by courier.

Why Austria files get refused

Four outcomes are possible on any file: grant, a request for further documents, a call for a personal interview, or refusal. Most applicants never face an interview — the Embassy calls one only when the file raises questions. The recurring refusal patterns are worth reading twice:

• Insufficient funds — the bank balance doesn't match the declared trip cost;
• Weak ties to India — no job, property, or family commitments showing return intent;
• Insurance failures — under €30,000, wrong insurer, or not covering the full trip;
• Inconsistent itinerary — Austria marked as main destination, more nights booked elsewhere;
• Vague cover letter — unclear purpose of visit;
• Unaddressed history — a recent Schengen refusal, from any country, not answered with new evidence.

Every one of these is fixable before submission and expensive after it. The applicant bears sole responsibility for the file's contents — incomplete or faulty documentation is itself listed as a ground for refusal.
