14 STEPS · AGES 18+ · 1 BUILDER · 30 DAYS · NO SHOUTING
Open the box. Empty the pieces onto a clean table. Don't lose anything — there are no spares.
The Danish Schengen visa is the friendliest Schengen for an Indian applicant. The Embassy is small. The fees are honest. The forms aren't long. Most rejections are from missing pieces, not bad pieces.
This is a build manual. Click each step into place. Don't skip ahead. The model only stands if every brick is locked in order.
Pick up the passport.
Check three things: issued within last 10 years, valid 3 months past your return date, at least 2 blank pages. If all three are yes, set it down. If any is no, stop and renew.
Open the form on screen.
Go to visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/dnk. Find the Schengen visa application. Don't print it yet. Fill it on screen so you can save and edit.
Fill in the easy half.
Pages 1-2 are personal: name, DOB, passport, address, employer. Match every detail to your passport exactly. Same spelling. Same dates. Don't get creative.
Fill in the trip half.
Pages 3-4 are about the journey. Member State of destination = Denmark. Date of arrival = your flight in. Date of departure = your flight out. Purpose = Tourism (or Business / Family Visit / Study, whichever applies). Cost of trip = approximate INR.
Take the photo.
One photo. 35×45 mm. Light grey or white background. Face fills 70-80% of the frame. Taken within last 6 months. No glasses, no hat (unless religious).
Buy the insurance.
Travel medical insurance: minimum €30,000 cover, valid for entire Schengen, for entire duration of trip. Tata AIG, Bajaj Allianz, ICICI Lombard all do this online for ~₹1,500 per traveller for a week.
Reserve the flights (don't buy).
Book a refundable / hold-able flight reservation. Don't buy the actual ticket until visa is approved. Most airlines hold tickets for 24-72 hours. Some sites (FlightDeal, ixigo) offer "Schengen visa flight reservation" for ₹500-1000 with the booking parked for 14 days.
Book hotels — every night.
Use Booking.com with the "Free cancellation" filter. Book a hotel for every single night you're in Denmark. Print the confirmation emails. The visa officer will count.
Get the bank statement.
Walk into your branch. Ask for a 6-month account statement, A4 paper, every page stamped, signed. Don't print from net-banking — that's rejected.
Get ITR + employment proof.
Last 3 years' Income Tax Return acknowledgement (ITR-V). For employed: last 3 salary slips + employer NOC on letterhead. For self-employed: GST registration + last 2 years' company ITR + 6 months' company bank statement.
Write the cover letter (1 page).
Three paragraphs. Who you are. Why Denmark. When you return. Sign at the bottom in blue ink. Print on plain A4. Don't decorate it.
Book the VFS appointment.
Go to visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/dnk → Book Appointment. Pick the nearest VFS centre. Pay ₹2,052 service charge online. Print the appointment confirmation.
Submit at VFS.
Carry: passport (original + 2 copies), printed form, photo, insurance, flights, hotels, bank statement, ITR, employment proof, cover letter, appointment printout. Pay €90 visa fee at the counter (~₹8,500 in INR). Biometrics are taken on the spot.
Wait. Then collect.
Standard processing is 15 working days. You'll get an SMS when your passport is back at VFS. Collect in person, or pay ₹450 for courier. Open the passport at home — find the visa sticker in the back pages.
You did it.
Buy the actual flight ticket now. Pack a sweater. The Danes don't smile much in public — that's normal, not personal.
Three things this manual doesn't shout about
1. Denmark is one of the cheapest Schengens. Total cost (visa + VFS + insurance) is about ₹12,500 per adult. Italy is similar. Switzerland is more.
2. Multiple-entry visas are common from Denmark. If you have 2+ previous Schengen entries with clean returns, the Danish Embassy frequently grants 1-year multi-entry visas instead of single-entry. Worth applying for if you travel often.
3. The Danish embassy doesn't ghost you. If something is missing, you'll often get an email asking you to email it in within 3 working days, not a flat refusal. This is unusual for Schengens — be grateful and respond fast.
