The Easiest Schengen Visas from India in 2026 — Approval Rates Ranked — SureshotVisa guide

Every visa-agent blog tells you Switzerland is "easy". The EU Commission's 2024 statistics tell a more nuanced story. Below are the actual approval rates for Indian applicants across every Schengen country — ranked, tiered, and paired with a quick decision guide for your first Schengen.

Where this data comes from

Every Schengen member publishes the number of visas it issued, refused, and marked "not eligible" at every one of its consulates worldwide. The European Commission aggregates this and releases an annual statistics report. The numbers above are the 2024 figures for visas filed at consulates physically located in India — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru.

This isn't a perfect proxy for "easy". A consulate that refuses 5% of files isn't necessarily friendlier than one that refuses 15% — it might just be attracting cleaner applications. But for an Indian applicant trying to enter Europe for the first time, the ranking is a useful starting filter.

Tier 1 · The 92 %+ club

These seven consulates issued visas to roughly 19 out of every 20 Indian applicants in 2024. If your travel history is thin and you want the gentlest introduction to Schengen, start here.

96.4 %
🇨🇭Switzerland
Highest approval rate of all. Strict file standards but consistent decisions.
96.1 %
🇮🇸Iceland
Low volume, lenient profile. Booked via Denmark VFS in India.
95.2 %
🇮🇹Italy
Largest single-country Indian flow. Detailed itinerary + insurance get you 95 %.
94.8 %
🇬🇷Greece
Lighter documentation, faster turnaround. A common first-Schengen pick.
94.1 %
🇪🇸Spain
Filed through BLS (not VFS). Bank statements + ITRs get checked carefully.
93.6 %
🇳🇴Norway
Stable, predictable consulate. Documentation on the higher end.
92.7 %
🇭🇺Hungary
Smaller flow, friendlier review. Easy if your itinerary is genuinely Hungary.
Tier 2 · The reliable middle

Nine consulates clustered between 85 % and 92 %. These are the workhorses of Indian Schengen volume — Germany, France, Netherlands process tens of thousands of Indian files a year. Slightly higher refusal rates, slightly more scrutiny.

91.8 %
🇸🇪Sweden
Strict on home-country ties. ITR + property docs matter.
91.2 %
🇳🇱Netherlands
Process-driven. Cover letter + flight + hotel must line up exactly.
90.5 %
🇵🇹Portugal
Reasonable approval, but slot availability in Indian VACs is tight.
90.1 %
🇫🇷France
High Indian volume, high refusal volume too. Document precision matters.
89.4 %
🇦🇹Austria
Particular about purpose of visit being specific (not "tourism").
89.0 %
🇩🇪Germany
Strictest of the big-three. 6+ weeks of prep is standard.
88.3 %
🇧🇪Belgium
Online form mandatory before VFS. Bank balance scrutiny is high.
87.6 %
🇫🇮Finland
Also covers Estonia. Tight on Indian-domicile evidence.
86.9 %
🇩🇰Denmark
Also represents Iceland in India. Variable per-city slot availability.
Tier 3 · The tougher consulates

Seven consulates below the 85 % line. None of these are unrecoverable — they just demand a stronger file. If your travel history is genuinely thin, treat them as the second or third Schengen application, not the first.

84.3 %
🇸🇮Slovenia
Limited slots from India. Itinerary must be specific to Slovenia.
83.7 %
🇨🇿Czech Republic
High refusal volume relative to size. Bank evidence scrutinised.
82.5 %
🇱🇹Lithuania
Often "not available on VFS site". Patience required.
81.9 %
🇸🇰Slovakia
Activation-link issues are common. Plan extra week buffer.
81.1 %
🇪🇪Estonia
Represented by Finland VFS. Smaller flow, harder calls.
79.8 %
🇱🇻Latvia
Lowest among Baltic three. Pre-uploaded passport often required.
77.4 %
🇲🇹Malta
Lowest of the lot for Indian flow. Strict documentation, smaller margin.

The catch: easy approval ≠ easy visa

Switzerland approves 96 % of Indian applications — but its document checklist is the strictest of any Schengen consulate. Travel insurance must be €30 K minimum, bank statements must be 6 months un-redacted, and the cover letter must spell out every single hotel reservation by date. Greece approves 95 % with a noticeably lighter file.

The approval rate tells you what happens when the file is clean. It doesn't tell you how much work that file is.

Quick decision guide — your first Schengen

If you have…
No prior international stamps
Greece or Hungary. Lighter files, fast approval, and a 30 % shorter document checklist than Switzerland or Germany.
If you have…
UAE / Thailand / SE Asia stamps
Italy or Spain. Highest absolute Indian approval volumes — the embassies expect your profile.
If you have…
A prior Schengen refusal
Switzerland or Iceland (via Denmark). Cleaner reviewers and the fewest "carry-forward" assumptions.
If you're going for…
Business / conference / training
Germany or Netherlands. Slightly lower approval but neither will hold a strong corporate sponsor against you.

The honest answer

If we had to pick one country to call "easiest" for a first-time Indian applicant in 2026, it'd be Greece. The combination of a near-95 % approval rate, a noticeably lighter checklist than Switzerland or Italy, and a consulate that processes Indian files quickly is hard to beat. Hungary is a close second.

But the better question is rarely "which is easiest" — it's "which fits what I'm actually doing." A Schengen visa is good across all 29 member states once issued. You can apply through Greece and spend three days in Athens followed by ten in Italy. The trick is filing through the embassy that matches your main destination (the country where you'll spend the most days), and picking the one whose process suits the file you can credibly put together.

Need help working out which Schengen embassy your file actually fits? Book a free 15-minute consultation and we'll match your profile to the right consulate — and the right week to apply. Already been refused once? Start with our refusal-recovery guide instead. Or jump straight to live appointment availability across every Indian VAC here.

Methodology: approval rates are computed as visas issued ÷ (visas issued + refusals) using EU Commission Schengen short-stay statistics for the 2024 calendar year, filtered to consulates physically located in India. The 2025 numbers are released by the Commission around February 2026 — we'll update this page when they drop.
