The Iceland file is a shoot plan in disguise.

Nobody flies to Iceland by accident. You go for the aurora over Jökulsárlón, the black sand at Reynisfjara, the steam off the Blue Lagoon at dawn. The visa officer knows that too — which is why the strongest Iceland application reads less like a form and more like a photographer's location list, costed honestly and backed by insurance that reaches the highlands.

₹9,900 embassy fee 15 calendar days Embassy of Iceland, New Delhi Reviewed by Sherbir Singh Grewal

Iceland is a single-jurisdiction country for Indian applicants — one Embassy in New Delhi decides every case, and VFS Global runs the front desk. That simplicity is a gift. It means there is no consulate-shopping, no state-by-state confusion. There is only one question that matters: does your file prove you can afford this trip and intend to come home. Here is how a photographer's mindset answers it.

Frame 01Three numbers, kept separate

Most first-time applicants blur three very different costs into one anxious figure. Keep them apart and the whole thing calms down.

What you actually pay to apply — Iceland Type C, 2026
Line itemAmount (INR)
Schengen visa fee — adult (1–90 days)₹9,900
Schengen visa fee — child (6–12 yrs)₹4,950
VFS service charge (incl. GST)₹2,900
Optional courier (standard / plus)₹518 / ₹1,400
Optional SMS updates₹345
Adult, applying alone, no add-ons₹12,800

That total is the application cost, and it is non-refundable if you are refused. It is not the trip cost, and it is not the funds you must show. Confusing the visa fee with the funds requirement is the single most common reason a nervous applicant over- or under-prepares. Our Iceland fee calculator keeps the running total honest as you add applicants and options.

Frame 02The location list is your itinerary

A photographer plans by place and light, not by day-number. The Embassy, coincidentally, reads an itinerary the same way — it wants to see that your route is real, bookable and consistent with your dates. So build it the way you'd build a shoot:

The contact sheet — what a believable Iceland route shows

01 · REYKJAVÍK
Arrival base. Hotel booking with a real confirmation number, free-cancellation is fine at the file stage.
02 · GOLDEN CIRCLE
Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss — a day loop that proves you researched, not guessed.
03 · SOUTH COAST
Reynisfjara, Vík, Jökulsárlón. Name them. Vague "touring Iceland" reads as unplanned.
04 · RETURN LEG
A confirmed round-trip flight reservation landing back in India inside your visa dates.

You do not need to prepay the whole trip. You need a hotel booking and a return flight reservation that hang together with the dates on your form. A route that names its stops is worth more than a glossy day-by-day that could describe any country.

Frame 03Funds realism — Iceland is expensive, and honesty wins

Iceland is one of the priciest destinations in Europe, and the officer assessing your file knows the going rate for a hotel night in Reykjavík and a rental 4x4. This is where budget realism does the heavy lifting. Show stamped bank statements for the last three months — a stable balance, not a lump sum that landed the week before you applied. Back it with ITRs or salary proof so the money has a visible origin. A file that shows ₹60,000 in savings for a ten-day Iceland self-drive doesn't fail because the number is small; it fails because the number doesn't match the trip. Match the two and the doubt disappears. Our note on reading a bank statement the way an officer does applies country-for-country here.

Frame 04Insurance that actually covers the highlands

Schengen rules require travel medical insurance with a minimum of EUR 30,000 in cover, valid across the whole Schengen area for your entire stay, including emergency treatment and repatriation. For Iceland, read the fine print for one thing photographers forget: the interior highlands, glacier walks and F-roads. A policy that excludes "adventure activities" or off-road travel can leave a gap exactly where Iceland's best frames are. Buy a plan that names the region and the activity level of your trip.

Frame 05The 5-day rule — Iceland's one sharp edge

Here is the Iceland-specific quirk worth tattooing on your camera strap. If the VFS officer marks any document as missing at submission, you have exactly five calendar days to email the missing papers to the Embassy (visa.nde@utn.is and visa@utn.is) — otherwise the Embassy decides on the incomplete file, and an incomplete file is a weak file. This is why we pre-check every page before you walk into VFS. You do not want to discover a missing insurance certificate on day four of a five-day clock.

Don't lose the frame

Standard processing is 15 calendar days from when the Embassy receives your complete file from VFS — not from your appointment date. Apply at least two weeks before travel, and earlier ahead of the aurora-season peak, when slots and processing both tighten.

Frame 06Where you'll actually apply

VFS Global runs Iceland application centres in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Chandigarh and Jalandhar — but every decision is made by the single Embassy of Iceland in New Delhi. You complete the online application at the Iceland government portal first, print the confirmation, then book your VFS slot and give biometrics in person. Our full, verified breakdown of fees, documents and the step order lives on the Iceland tourist visa guide; this post is the way to think about the file, that page is the checklist to build it.

The developing tray

Iceland tourist visa — the questions Indian travellers actually ask

How much bank balance do I need for an Iceland tourist visa from India?

There is no single official figure. Iceland is an expensive destination, so show funds that realistically cover your specific itinerary — flights, accommodation, a rental if you're self-driving, and daily costs — evidenced by three months of stamped, stable bank statements. A balance that matches your trip beats a large last-minute deposit, which is a common red flag.

How long does the Iceland visa take to process from India?

Standard processing is 15 calendar days, counted from when the Embassy of Iceland in New Delhi receives your complete file from VFS — not from your submission date. It can extend if the Embassy requests an interview or extra documents, so apply at least two weeks before travel and earlier during the aurora-season peak.

Which Schengen country should I apply to for an Iceland trip?

Apply to Iceland if it is your main destination — where you'll spend the most nights or which is the main purpose of the trip. If Iceland is only a short stop on a longer multi-country route, you apply through the country where you spend the most time instead.

What is the 5-day missing-document rule for Iceland?

If the VFS officer marks any required document as missing when you submit, you have five calendar days to email the missing papers to the Embassy (visa.nde@utn.is and visa@utn.is), or the Embassy decides on your incomplete file. Pre-checking every document before your appointment is the only reliable way to avoid this clock.

Do I need special insurance for glaciers and the highlands?

You need Schengen-compliant travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 cover, valid area-wide for your whole stay. For Iceland specifically, check that the policy doesn't exclude adventure activities, glacier walks or off-road (F-road) travel, since a standard policy can leave a gap exactly where Iceland's itineraries go.

Do I have to buy my flight tickets before applying?

No — submit a confirmed round-trip flight reservation, not a purchased ticket, and buy the fare only after the visa is granted. Because the visa is issued for your travel dates, fix those dates before you file rather than changing them afterwards.

Is biometrics required for the Iceland visa?

Yes — first-time Schengen applicants give fingerprints and a photo in person at the VFS centre. If you provided Schengen biometrics within the last 59 months they may be reused, though the Embassy can still ask you to appear.
