Why the connoisseurs go to Riga first

Paris has queues. Prague has crowds. Riga has Alberta iela at nine in the morning, entirely to yourself.

Riga's Old Town is UNESCO-listed, and its art-nouveau district is one of the finest concentrations of the style anywhere in Europe — façades crowded with sphinxes, sunbursts and long-faced maidens, best seen between April and September, when guided walking tours run daily. Beyond the city, the standard circuit adds Jūrmala's Baltic beaches and the medieval forests of Sigulda. Winter has its own logic — Christmas markets under real snow — but pack seriously: −10°C is normal from December to February.

And because Latvia is a full Schengen member, the visa that gets you to Riga unlocks all 29 Schengen countries — up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Vilnius is down the road, Tallinn up the coast; a Latvia visa is the natural spine of a Baltic triple.

One embassy in Delhi decides everything

Where to apply is refreshingly unambiguous. The Embassy of the Republic of Latvia, New Delhi holds a single jurisdiction covering all of India (and Sri Lanka). Wherever you live, your file ends up on the same desk in Delhi.

You submit through VFS Latvia centres in eleven cities — New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Chandigarh and Jalandhar. One practical nuance: files submitted outside Delhi travel to the Embassy by post, adding about two days before processing begins. Standard processing itself is quick by Schengen standards — 10 working days — and the official advice is to apply at least two weeks before travel. Our own advice is 4–6 weeks, because holidays deserve margins.

Rule one: Hello Verify comes before everything

This is the step that catches nearly every first-time applicant. India and Sri Lanka applicants must upload their supporting documents to Hello Verify, VFS's document-verification portal, and obtain a confirmation slip — before a VFS appointment can even be scheduled. No slip, no slot. The slip is single-use, too: if you ever reapply, you do the Hello Verify process again from the start.

Rule two: the appointment is prepaid

Latvia's VFS service charge — ₹2,913, inclusive of GST — must be paid online or through the contact centre at the moment of scheduling. Without pre-payment, no appointment is allotted, and the service fee is in principle non-refundable even if you never attend. So the correct order of operations is: documents ready → Hello Verify slip in hand → pay and book → attend.

Add to the ledger the items the checklist quietly requires: travel medical insurance of €30,000 minimum, valid Schengen-wide for your whole stay plus a 15-day "period of grace" — an insurance card alone is not sufficient, the certificate must travel with the file. Two photographs, 35 × 45 mm, no more than six months old, on a white or off-white background. And a passport valid three months beyond your Schengen departure, issued within ten years, with two blank pages.
