Liechtenstein: the country with no embassy.

A principality of 160 square kilometres, tucked between Switzerland and Austria, with no visa centre in India and no embassy in Delhi. So how does an Indian tourist get in? The answer is a small, precise, oddly elegant piece of diplomatic plumbing — and here it is, explained.

Chapter I · The riddle

Whom do you ask, when the country has no one in India to ask?

You decide to visit Liechtenstein. You open VFS Global to book an appointment. Liechtenstein is not there. You search for the Embassy of Liechtenstein in New Delhi. There isn't one. This is where most applicants quietly give up — and where the real answer begins.

Liechtenstein is one of the world's smallest and wealthiest countries: a doubly landlocked Alpine principality, still ruled by a reigning Prince, whose castle looks down on the capital, Vaduz. It is a full member of the Schengen area. And it has decided, sensibly, that running a global network of visa offices for a country you can cross on foot in an afternoon is not worth the trouble.

So it borrows one. Switzerland represents Liechtenstein for Schengen visa matters. Applications from India are submitted to the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, which is competent for Liechtenstein, and VFS Switzerland handles reception and passport return for short-stay files. The fees, photo specifications, insurance rules and document lists all follow the Swiss/Schengen standard. In other words: to visit Liechtenstein, you file what is, mechanically, a Swiss-processed Schengen application. Our full Liechtenstein tourist visa guide lays out the checklist; this article is about understanding the machine.

Chapter II · The mechanism

How the application actually moves, step by careful step

The representation arrangement changes exactly one thing about the process — how you get your appointment — and leaves everything else standard. Here is the whole sequence:

  1. Complete and sign the Schengen application form first, using the form routed via the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, which is competent for Liechtenstein.
  2. Request your appointment by email. This is the quirk that trips people up. Because Liechtenstein is not on VFS self-booking, you do not click a slot online — you email the Embassy of Switzerland's visa section (newdelhi.visa@eda.admin.ch) to arrange the appointment directly. Slots are finite; email early.
  3. Attend in person and give biometrics. Fingerprints and a live photo are captured on the day, unless you provided them for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting.
  4. Submit one document set and pay. The €90 visa fee plus a ₹3,100 service charge is collected at submission.
  5. Wait, then collect. Processing is around 15 calendar days from when the consulate receives a complete file, stretching to 30–45 days in peak season or if an interview or extra documents are requested. VFS Switzerland handles the return of your passport.
Decree · The one instruction most people miss

You cannot book a Liechtenstein slot on the VFS website — there is no self-booking. The appointment is arranged by email with the Swiss representation. Everything about your file will read "Switzerland" — the Embassy, the form routing, the VFS reception. That is correct, not a mistake. You are visiting Liechtenstein; you are being processed by its appointed representative.

Chapter III · The treasury

What a Liechtenstein visa costs from India

Line itemAmount
Schengen Type C visa fee — adult€90, payable in INR at the prevailing exchange rate; subject to change₹9,600
Child aged 6–12€45 — half rate₹4,800
Child under 6Exempt from the visa feeFREE
VFS / Embassy service chargePer application, inclusive of 9% SGST + 9% CGST₹3,100
Compulsory total, one adult₹12,700

Optional services follow the Swiss schedule: courier ₹930, SMS ₹450, the SMS + courier combo ₹1,250, and a Premium Lounge at ₹4,600 (not offered at every centre). None are compulsory. As with every Schengen file, all fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome — you are paying for the examination, not for a yes. The €90 moves with the exchange rate, so the rupee figure on your day may differ slightly. Chapter IV · The file

The document set — Swiss-standard, precisely as expected

Because Switzerland processes the file, the checklist is the Swiss Schengen checklist. There are no Liechtenstein-specific surprises — only the standard rules, applied strictly.

  • Passport — at least 2 blank pages, valid 3+ months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years. Handwritten or non-machine-readable Indian passports issued after 01/04/2010 are not accepted.
  • Two biometric photos — 35–45 mm, white background, taken within 6 months, face filling 70–80% of the frame.
  • Personal cover letter — your purpose of travel, itinerary and intended means of transport.
  • Travel & accommodation — a flight reservation (not a purchased ticket), a day-by-day plan, and hotel or rental bookings for each Member State you visit.
  • Travel medical insurance — minimum €30,000 cover, valid across the entire Schengen area for the whole trip, from an embassy-approved insurer, covering accident, illness, evacuation and repatriation.
  • Financials — original 3-month bank statement, stamped and signed; ITR acknowledgments for the last 2 assessment years; and, per your profile, payslips + contract + leave approval (employed), company registration with GST (self-employed), or pension statements (retired).
  • Purpose of visit — a travel-agency certificate confirming an organised trip, or your own documents showing the travel plan.
  • For minors — notarised consent from the non-travelling parent(s), ID copies, and the child's birth certificate.

A realistic Liechtenstein trip rarely stands alone — the principality is small enough to see in a day or two, so most itineraries pair it with Switzerland or Austria next door. That is entirely fine, with one rule: Liechtenstein must be your main destination — the country where you spend the most nights — if it is the country issuing your visa. Book more nights across the border than in Vaduz and you have undermined the very reason you are applying through Liechtenstein at all. Keep the reservation logic honest, and use our flight-itinerary-for-Schengen guide so the reservation satisfies the file without you buying tickets before a decision exists.

Caution · Where these files fail

The refusal patterns are the ordinary Schengen ones: funds that don't match the declared trip cost; weak ties to India; insurance under €30,000 or from a non-approved insurer; an itinerary claiming Liechtenstein as the main destination while most nights are booked elsewhere; and incomplete files — the consulate is not obliged to request missing documents before refusing. A recent Schengen refusal is survivable, but only if the new file addresses it with fresh evidence rather than hoping it goes unnoticed.

Chapter V · The petitioner's questions

Everything travellers ask about the no-embassy visa

Why do I apply through Switzerland for a Liechtenstein visa?

Because Liechtenstein runs no visa centre in India and is not available on VFS self-booking. Switzerland represents Liechtenstein for Schengen visa matters, so applications are submitted to the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi, with VFS Switzerland handling reception and passport return. It is a formal representation arrangement, not a workaround.

Does Liechtenstein have an embassy or VFS centre in India?

No — neither. There is no Embassy of Liechtenstein in Delhi and no Liechtenstein counter at VFS. The Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi is competent for Liechtenstein, and you request your appointment there directly by email rather than booking a slot online.

How do I book a Liechtenstein visa appointment?

Not through the VFS website — there is no self-booking for Liechtenstein. You email the visa section of the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi (newdelhi.visa@eda.admin.ch) to arrange the appointment. Because slots are limited, complete and sign your form first, then email early.

How much does a Liechtenstein tourist visa cost from India?

The compulsory total is ₹12,700 per adult — a €90 (₹9,600) visa fee plus a ₹3,100 service charge inclusive of GST. Children aged 6–12 pay €45 (₹4,800) and children under 6 are exempt from the visa fee. Optional courier, SMS and lounge services are extra, and all fees are non-refundable whatever the outcome.

Can I visit other Schengen countries on a Liechtenstein visa?

Yes. A Schengen Type C visa issued for Liechtenstein is valid across all 29 Schengen countries for the validity and stay allowance on the sticker — up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Liechtenstein should simply be your main destination, meaning most of your booked nights are there.

How long does the Liechtenstein visa take to process?

Around 15 calendar days from when the consulate receives a complete file, excluding transit time, and up to 30–45 days in peak season or if an interview or extra documents are requested. Apply up to 6 months (180 days) before travel, and at least 15 calendar days before departure.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Liechtenstein?

Yes — minimum €30,000 of medical cover, valid across the entire Schengen area for your whole trip, from an embassy-approved insurer. It must cover accident, illness, emergency evacuation and repatriation. A non-compliant policy makes the file incomplete regardless of everything else in it.

Do I have to travel to Delhi to apply?

The appointment is arranged through the Swiss representation, and VFS Switzerland centres across India handle reception and passport return for short-stay files. Confirm the centre covering your jurisdiction when you email for the appointment, since the arrangement is coordinated with the Embassy of Switzerland rather than through ordinary VFS self-booking.

Chancery notes. Filed 04 July 2026. Liechtenstein has no visa centre of its own in India; Switzerland represents it for Schengen visa matters, and applications are submitted to the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi (competent for Liechtenstein) with VFS Switzerland handling reception/return. Fee figures (€90 / ₹9,600 adult; €45 / ₹4,800 child 6–12; under-6 exempt; ₹3,100 service charge incl. GST) follow the Swiss/Schengen schedule and move with the exchange rate. Verify current figures and the appointment procedure with the Embassy of Switzerland New Delhi (eda.admin.ch/newdelhi) before applying.

This guide is for information only and does not guarantee a visa. Every application is assessed on its own merits, and the decision is the sole prerogative of the competent consulate (the Swiss representation acting for Liechtenstein). Fees, once paid, are non-refundable regardless of the outcome.
