Refusal-aware

The Lithuania tourist visa from India: what refused applicants wish they had known.

Vilnius's baroque old town and the lakeside castle at Trakai are worth the trip. But most Lithuania refusals from India are not about the traveller — they are about two avoidable filing mistakes. This is the case-file view, so your name never lands on the wrong list.

Exhibit A · Opening

The refusals that hurt most are the ones about paperwork, not you

A strong applicant with a clean profile can still be refused a Lithuania visa — for using the wrong form, or attaching the one document the Embassy explicitly does not accept.

We have written before about the destinations. This piece is deliberately different. If you have already read our Lithuania visa refusal analysis — or, worse, you are reading this after a refusal of your own — you already know the sting: the trip was reasonable, the funds were there, and the file still came back rejected. Almost always, the reason is procedural, and procedural means preventable.

The Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania, New Delhi decides every Indian application, through VFS Lithuania centres across eleven cities. It is the single jurisdiction for all of India. And it runs its intake in a way that catches applicants who assume Lithuania works like every other Schengen country. It does not. Here is what the refused wish they had known — each with the fix that would have changed the outcome.

Exhibit B · The two big ones

The two mistakes behind most Lithuania refusals

Wish I'd known #1 The application form is not the VFS form.

Lithuania uses its own government portal — MIGRIS, at migracija.lt/en — for the visa application form. Every applicant creates their own MIGRIS login, selects India as nationality, fills the Schengen form there, then prints and signs it. The generic VFS Schengen form that works for other countries does not work for Lithuania, and files using the wrong form are rejected at the counter before they ever reach the Embassy.

The fix: Complete the MIGRIS form first, on the official portal. It is the single most common reason Lithuania files get bounced — and the easiest to avoid.
Wish I'd known #2 Affidavits are not accepted as evidence. At all.

The Embassy of Lithuania explicitly rejects affidavits as proof of relationship, funds or employment. When a proper document is missing — a bank certificate, an employer letter, a property record — Indian applicants often reach for a notarised affidavit as a substitute. Against Lithuania, that substitution actively harms the file.

The fix: Source the real document. A stamped bank statement, an employer's letter on letterhead, a GST-verifiable business registration — never an affidavit standing in for any of them.

The Embassy is not obliged to ask for missing documents before deciding — an incomplete file can simply be refused. And a booked flight ticket earns no faster processing, so there is no upside to buying tickets early and every downside if the visa is refused. Submit reservations, not purchases.

Exhibit C · The finer print

The details that quietly sink Lithuanian files

Wish I'd known #3 The photo spec is stricter than most.

35 × 45 mm, high-definition colour, white background, face covering at least 80% of the frame, no smile, no headgear except for religious reasons (with chin, nose, eyes and eyebrows visible), no hair tucked behind the ears, no staple marks. Crucially, scanned and colour-photocopied photos are not accepted. A weak photo is on the published refusal list.

The fix: Get ICAO-compliant prints from a studio that knows Schengen specs — our Schengen photo guide shows exactly what passes.
Wish I'd known #4 The cover letter is mandatory, not optional.

Lithuania's checklist requires a cover letter signed by the applicant, setting out the purpose of travel, duration, accompanying persons, transport and accommodation. A vague or missing letter reads as a vague trip — and an under-explained itinerary weakens an otherwise sound file.

The fix: Write a specific, dated, day-by-day narrative. If you were refused before, address that earlier reason head-on in the letter.
Wish I'd known #5 The bank statement needs the bank's stamp — and ties to India need to show.

An original three-month statement, stamped and signed by the bank, plus ITR acknowledgements for the last two assessment years. Weak ties to India — especially for younger applicants — is a recurring refusal theme, so the file has to tell a convincing "I am coming back" story through employment, family and assets.

The fix: Present stamped originals and a coherent ties narrative. Our bank statement guide covers the presentation standard embassies expect.
Exhibit D · The numbers

Fees, timing and the clock you cannot buy back

Lithuania visa fees · per applicant · 2026
ItemAmount
Visa fee — adult (Schengen Type C)EUR 90 — cash or card; non-refundable if refused₹9,720
Visa fee — child 6–12 yearsEUR 45₹4,860
Visa fee — child under 6EXEMPT
VFS service charge — age 12 and aboveEUR 17.90, inclusive of CGST 9% + SGST 9%₹1,931
VFS service charge — children 0–11 yearsFREE

The compulsory adult total is ₹11,651 — notably, Lithuania's VFS service charge is among the lowest of the Baltics. Family members of EU / EEA / Swiss citizens travelling under Directive 2004/38/EC pay zero visa fee (the VFS charge still applies), and family members of Lithuanian citizens pay €0 too — with a notarised marriage or birth certificate plus an extract from the Lithuanian population register. For your own family's figure, the Lithuania visa cost calculator does the maths.

On timing: standard processing is 15 calendar days at the Embassy, extending to 30 days if further documents or an interview are requested. Apply no earlier than six months and no later than 15 working days before travel; satellite VFS centres add 2–3 days of postal transit. Insurance is the usual Schengen requirement — €30,000 minimum, valid across all Schengen countries, covering the entire trip including arrival and departure days.

Exhibit E · The reward

What a clean file actually buys you

Get the file right and Lithuania opens up generously. The visa is a full Schengen Type C — up to 90 days in any 180-day period, valid across all 29 Schengen countries. Vilnius's UNESCO old town is the anchor; Trakai Castle is a 30-minute drive west, an easy half-day beside the city. Add the Curonian Spit's UNESCO sand dunes, modernist Kaunas and the port at Klaipėda, and you have a country that rewards the traveller who took its paperwork seriously.

Lithuania at its best is May to September; winter brings Christmas markets but genuine cold, so pack for −10°C. And because the same visa covers Latvia and Estonia, a Vilnius–Riga–Tallinn run is the natural Baltic circuit — just remember Lithuania must be your main destination if it issues the visa. Exhibit F · Questions on record

Lithuania visa questions, answered without spin

Why do Lithuania visas from India get refused so often?

The two leading procedural causes are using the wrong application form — the generic VFS form instead of the mandatory MIGRIS form at migracija.lt/en — and submitting an affidavit, which the Embassy of Lithuania explicitly does not accept as evidence. Beyond those, weak ties-to-India narratives, unstamped bank statements, non-compliant photos and under-strength insurance round out the pattern. All are preventable at preparation stage.

What is MIGRIS and do I have to use it?

MIGRIS is Lithuania's electronic immigration portal at migracija.lt/en, and yes — it is mandatory. Every applicant creates a login, selects India as nationality, and fills the Schengen visa application form there, then prints and signs it. Files that use the standard VFS form instead are rejected at the counter, so MIGRIS is the very first step, before booking anything.

Why won't an affidavit work for my Lithuania visa?

The Embassy of Lithuania states plainly that affidavits are not considered documents of evidence. Substituting an affidavit for a proper bank certificate, employer letter, ITR or property registry document weakens the file rather than strengthening it. Always source the genuine document instead.

How long does a Lithuania tourist visa take from India?

Fifteen calendar days is standard at the Embassy of Lithuania, New Delhi, extending to 30 days if additional documentation or an interview is requested. Apply no later than 15 working days before travel and up to six months ahead; VFS centres outside Delhi add 2–3 days of postal transit before the clock starts.

What is the Lithuania visa fee for Indians in 2026?

₹9,720 (EUR 90) for adults and ₹4,860 (EUR 45) for children aged 6–12; children under six are exempt from the visa fee. The VFS service charge is ₹1,931 for anyone aged 12 and above and free for children under 12, making the compulsory adult total ₹11,651. Family members of EU/EEA/Swiss or Lithuanian citizens can qualify for a zero visa fee.

Can I visit Latvia and Estonia on a Lithuania visa?

Yes — Lithuania is a full Schengen member, so its Type C visa is valid across all 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A Vilnius–Riga–Tallinn Baltic trip works well. The condition is that Lithuania must be your main destination — most nights or main purpose — for it to issue the visa.

Should I buy flight tickets before my Lithuania visa is issued?

No. The Embassy confirms that a booked ticket does not result in faster processing, so there is no benefit to early purchase and real risk if the visa is refused. Submit a round-trip flight reservation, not a paid ticket, and only buy once the visa is in your passport.

I was refused a Lithuania visa before — can I reapply?

Yes. Diagnose the exact reason first — often it is the MIGRIS form, an affidavit, a photo defect or a thin ties narrative — then rebuild the file to remove that specific weakness and address it directly in your cover letter. A refusal is not a lifetime bar; an unexamined reapplication that repeats the same mistake usually is another refusal.
