There is a habit among Indian travellers of treating the Schengen zone as if it had only four doors. Luxembourg is not one of them — and that is precisely the point.

Luxembourg is a full Schengen member. A tourist visa it issues opens all 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, exactly like a French or German one. Yet it moves far less application volume from India, because most people never think to look at it. The contrarian's insight is simple: for the traveller who actually wants to spend their trip in the Grand Duchy, a quieter consulate is not a compromise — it is a feature. First, the honest caveat — because contrarian is not the same as clever

Let us be clear about what this essay is not arguing. It is not a trick to dodge a busy consulate. The main-destination rule is absolute: apply through Luxembourg only if Luxembourg is your main Schengen destination — the longest stay or the main purpose of the trip. If you're really doing a France-Belgium-Luxembourg loop with the Grand Duchy as a single-night stop, you must apply through the country where you'll spend the most time, and "Luxembourg shown as a one-night stop on a bigger Schengen trip" is a listed reason applications are refused.

So the uncrowded door is for genuine visitors only. The good news is that Luxembourg gives you plenty of honest reason to be one.

What calm authority actually looks like at this door

One embassy, one decision-maker

Every Indian Luxembourg application is decided by a single authority: the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, New Delhi (84 Jor Bagh), which also covers Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. There is no forwarding to a distant consulate, no jurisdiction lottery across zones. You submit at a VFS Luxembourg centre — New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Chandigarh or Jalandhar — and one desk in Delhi decides. Simplicity is its own kind of advantage.

The applicant-only rule — a discipline, not an obstacle

Here is the quirk that defines the Luxembourg tourist door: it is the only Luxembourg visa category where representatives, travel agents and company reps cannot submit on your behalf. The applicant must attend VFS in person. Every other category — Business, Family/Friends, Cultural, Long-Term — accepts an authorised representative; Tourist does not.

Read cynically, that's a hassle. Read correctly, it's a filter that keeps the door calm — and a reason to prepare properly yourself rather than outsourcing the file to a courier. It also means a good consultant's job here is to get you ready for your own appointment, not to stand in for you.

Walking through the door: the file it asks for

The requirements are standard Schengen, applied with Luxembourg's characteristic tidiness:

• Application form, downloaded from VFS Luxembourg, completed, dated and signed — with the photo pasted, not stapled.
• Photo: 35 × 45 mm, colour, white background, face 30–36 mm chin-to-hair, under 6 months old, unedited, name written on the back.
• Passport: machine-readable, issued within the last 10 years, valid 3+ months beyond your Schengen departure, 2 blank pages.
• A complete day-by-day travel programme — mandatory for tourists, and the single strongest signal that you are a genuine visitor. This is where lingering in Vianden and the Mullerthal on paper works in your favour.
• Hotel bookings for the full stay and a transport reservation — paid tickets are not required at submission.
• Travel medical insurance: minimum €30,000, valid across all Schengen countries, covering accident, urgent care, emergency hospital treatment and repatriation for the entire trip.
• Original bank statement, last 3 months, on letterhead with the branch manager's name and signature, plus ITR for the last 2 assessment years.
• A covering letter from your employer / company / school confirming your position and that leave has been granted.

The fee, and the one deadline that actually bites

All fees are non-refundable in case of refusal. Standard processing is 15 calendar days at the New Delhi embassy from when it receives the file, extending up to 45 days if further documents or checks are needed, with 1–4 days of transit each way between VFS and the embassy.

And here is the one deadline that genuinely bites: apply at least 4 weeks before travel — 6 weeks during the March–June peak.
