Apply Malta, Not France: Smart First Schengen 2026

Everyone applies to France. That is precisely the problem.

There is a herd instinct in the Indian Schengen market, and it runs straight at the biggest consulates. France, then Italy, then Germany — the famous names, the ones with the most YouTube walkthroughs and the longest appointment queues. My contrarian view, formed across a lot of desks, is that the first-time applicant who quietly picks Malta is playing a better hand.

This is an opinion piece, so let me be honest about what it is not. It is not a claim that Malta is easier to "get". No Schengen consulate is a soft touch, and I will not pretend otherwise — the final decision on any file rests with the mission, full stop. What I am arguing is narrower and, I think, sturdier: Malta's process is clean, self-contained, and gameable in the good sense — you can satisfy it precisely because its rules are unusually explicit.

And Malta the destination is no consolation prize. Valletta's UNESCO-listed baroque capital, the walled Silent City of Mdina, the Blue Lagoon at Comino, the Megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim, the painted Luzzu boats at Marsaxlokk — this is a genuine Mediterranean holiday, not a visa hack. And the visa you receive is a full Schengen Type C: 90 days in any 6-month period from first entry, valid across all 29 Schengen countries. Why Malta is the intelligent first Schengen

One decision-maker, plainly named

India's Malta files are decided by the High Commission of Malta, New Delhi — note "High Commission", because Malta is a Commonwealth member, not "Embassy". One authority for every applicant across India, Nepal and the Maldives, submitting through VFS. There is no four-way consulate map to decode as there is with Italy, no operator confusion as with Greece or Spain. You always know exactly who is reading your file.

A checklist that tells you its own traps

Most consulates hide their idiosyncrasies; Malta prints them. The checklist tells you outright that it wants 3 blank passport pages, not 2 — a Malta-specific rule that quietly refuses the unwary. It tells you the old passport is mandatory for every applicant. It tells you the Aadhaar card is non-negotiable for Indian residents. It gives you a 5-day window to supply any missing document before the file is refused. When a process warns you about its own edges this clearly, a careful applicant simply does not fall off them.

Lower volumes, less peak-season chaos

Malta is not where the herd goes, and that is a feature. Fewer applicants means the appointment scramble that plagues the big consulates in April–September is less brutal. You still apply early — 4 weeks minimum, ideally 6 — but you are not fighting a crowd for a slot.

A real Mediterranean trip on one clean visa

Pair Malta with Sicily and you have a two-island Mediterranean holiday on a single Schengen sticker. The one condition — and it is the same everywhere — is that Malta must be your main destination, the place you spend the most nights. Apply to Malta for a trip that is really about Rome, and you have manufactured the exact mismatch consulates are trained to catch.

The one rule Malta will not forgive: the 16 insurers

Every honest opinion piece names its own weakest point. Malta's is a rule so strict that it sinks otherwise-perfect files — and you must respect it before you buy anything.

The insurance itself must still clear the ordinary bar: minimum EUR 30,000 cover, valid for all Schengen countries, covering accident, urgent medical care, emergency hospitalisation and repatriation, and spanning the whole trip including arrival and departure days. But in 2026 the issuer matters as much as the cover. Buy from the approved 16 early, check the current list on the VFS Malta page before you pay, and keep the receipt. My whole "apply Malta" argument collapses if you get this one wrong — so don't. It is the single strictest thing about the Malta file, and it is entirely within your control.

While we're being fair-minded, two more Malta-specific edges belong in the counterpoint: that 3-blank-page passport rule (not the usual 2), and the fact that non-Delhi VFS centres like Cochin and Lucknow, and Nepal applications, add roughly 3 days of transit to the High Commission — Maldives adds 6 working days. None of these is hard. All of them are unforgiving if ignored.

What the smart first Schengen costs and how long it takes

Fees track the EUR/INR rate and are non-refundable in case of refusal. The clock: 15 calendar days standard at the High Commission of Malta, New Delhi — measured from when the file is received from VFS, not from your submission day — plus that transit for non-Delhi centres and 3–6 days for document movement between VFS and the High Commission. Apply 4 weeks (ideally 6) before travel; six months out is the earliest the Schengen Code allows.
