The NOK 500 rule is the floor, not the summit

Before route, before dates, before anything: the Norway tourist file is a funds file. Sort the money proof and half the climb is done.

The stated minimum is NOK 500 per person per day, documented through bank statements covering the last three months — stamped and signed by the bank. A 10-day trip therefore needs NOK 5,000, roughly ₹40,000, clearly visible. Show this convincingly and you don't strictly need a sponsorship form at all.

But here's the part first-time applicants miss: the officer isn't just checking a threshold, they're checking realism. Fjord cruises, mountain railways, Tromsø in aurora season — these cost real money, and an itinerary full of them attached to a bank statement that barely clears the floor reads as a plan that won't survive contact with Norwegian prices. "Insufficient funds against the NOK 500/day rule" sits at the top of Norway's common refusal reasons for a reason.

One warning that repeats across every Schengen desk: a large, sudden deposit landing in the account three weeks before you apply doesn't look like savings. It looks like staging.

Your itinerary is read as a budget document

Norway's checklist contains a line most countries don't put in bold: you must submit either a travel agency certificate confirming an organised trip, or a detailed self-planned itinerary. Not optional. The Embassy wants to see the route — and it wants the route, the accommodation proof and the bank statement to describe the same trip.

Norway's route is different: UDI portal first, VFS second

Most Schengen countries hand you a PDF form. Norway doesn't. Everything starts at the UDI Application Portal (selvbetjening.udi.no) — you register the application online, select "Visitor visa", pay the €90 fee in the portal, and receive a cover letter by email. That cover letter is mandatory at your VFS appointment; without it, you're a hiker without a permit at the trailhead.

1. Register online at selvbetjening.udi.no — form, payment, printed cover letter.
2. Book biometrics at one of eleven VFS centres: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Jalandhar or Jaipur.
3. Submit the file — originals plus A4 photocopies, no staples or pins, all documents in Norwegian or English (anything else needs an authorised translator). Fingerprints and photo taken at the counter, unless yours are on record from a Schengen application within the last 59 months.
4. VFS couriers the file to the Royal Norwegian Embassy, New Delhi — the 15-day clock starts when the Embassy receives it, not when you submit.
5. Decision by SMS/email; passport back via VFS or courier.

Timing, in expedition terms: standard processing is 15 calendar days, stretching to 30 if documents or an interview are requested, and up to 45 in exceptional cases referred to UDI. You can apply up to six months out and no later than 15 days before departure — the sweet spot is 3–4 weeks ahead, early enough to absorb weather, late enough that bookings stay fresh.

What the permit itself costs

Every fee is non-refundable whatever the outcome. A quieter exemption worth knowing: family members of EU/EEA nationals, pupils, students and teachers on educational trips, and researchers are exempt from the embassy fee — it's paid up front in the UDI portal and refunded at the appointment. Two boundary notes for the ambitious route-planner. First, a Norway Schengen visa covers mainland Norway and all 29 Schengen countries — but not Svalbard: stays beyond 24 hours up there need separate authorisation from the Governor of Svalbard.
