Bratislava is roughly an hour from Vienna by train — closer than most people are to their own airport. That proximity is the whole idea behind the twin-city trip.

Slovakia is a full Schengen member, so its Type C tourist visa grants 90 days in any 180-day period across all 29 Schengen countries — Vienna very much included. You can base yourself in Bratislava's compact, walkable old town, day-trip to Vienna's Ringstrasse and Schönbrunn, and never show a passport at the border. Main destination: Slovakia or Austria?

Here's the trap in the twin-city play. Because Bratislava and Vienna are so close, travellers assume it doesn't matter which country they apply to. It does. The Schengen rule is firm: you apply through the country that is your main destination — where you spend the most nights — or, if nights are split evenly, your country of first entry.

Get this backwards and you risk a refusal for an itinerary that contradicts the country you applied to — one of Slovakia's listed refusal reasons is exactly an "inconsistent itinerary." If you fly into one city and out of the other with an even split, first entry breaks the tie. Plan the nights honestly first, then pick the consulate; never the other way around.

What the Slovakia visa costs from India

The €90 Embassy fee is set in euros, so the rupee figure at the counter moves with the exchange rate — budget a small buffer rather than an exact number. Everything is payable by cash, card, or UPI, and none of it is refundable if the visa is refused. Family members of EU/EEA/Swiss nationals are exempt from the Embassy fee. Documents, deadlines, and the itinerary that ties it together

Slovakia runs the standard Schengen Annex II checklist, processed via VFS Global India for the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in New Delhi. The load-bearing pieces:

• Passport — valid 3 months beyond stay, 2 blank pages, issued within the last 10 years, with old passports attached;
• Application form + one photo — 35–40 mm, white background, taken within 6 months;
• Cover letter and itinerary — a travel-agency certificate for an organised trip, or a detailed self-planned day-by-day plan showing where each night is spent (this is what proves Slovakia is your main destination);
• Accommodation and transport — hotel reservations for the whole stay and a return flight reservation, not a purchased ticket;
• Travel medical insurance — €30,000 minimum, Schengen-wide, covering the full trip plus emergency evacuation;
• Financial proof — original 3-month bank statement, stamped and signed, showing at least about €50 per day documented, plus ITRs for the last 2 assessment years.

On timing: apply at least 15 days before travel and up to 6 months ahead; the sweet spot is 4–6 weeks out. Standard processing is 15 calendar days from when the Slovak Embassy receives the complete file, extendable to 30–45 days if more documents or an interview are needed.
