Spain Visa from India 2026: It's BLS, Not VFS (7 Myths)
Last reviewed: 15 July 2026 · Verified against current VFS Global India fees
Spain visa files from India go to BLS International — not VFS Global. We debunk that myth and six more that quietly get Spanish tourist files refused.

Your Spain visa does not go to VFS. It goes to BLS.
Half the Spain-visa advice circulating in India is recycled from other Schengen countries — and Spain plays by its own rulebook. Seven confident, widely repeated, completely wrong beliefs. Debunked with the checklist in hand.
Every week someone tells us they've "booked VFS for Spain". There is no VFS for Spain. That one wrong word costs people days of hunting for appointment slots that cannot exist — and it's only myth number one.
Below are the seven myths we correct most often at the desk, in descending order of damage. Each one comes with the actual rule from the Spain checklist we work from — the same source behind our full Spain tourist visa guide.
Seven myths, seven corrections
Spain visa files in India are submitted at VFS Global.
Reality Spain does not use VFS Global in India. Applications — short-stay Schengen and national visas alike — are handled by BLS International on behalf of the Embassy of Spain, New Delhi and the Consulate General of Spain, Mumbai. You book on blsspainvisa.com, and you submit the physical file in person at a BLS centre, where your biometrics are captured. Search "VFS Spain" and you will find plenty of pages; none of them can book you an appointment that exists.
The fee is whatever the first Schengen fee table on Google says.
Reality The Schengen fee is €90, but Spain collects it in rupees at its own consular exchange rate — currently around ₹8,300 for an adult, ₹4,150 for children aged 6–12, and free under 6 — plus the BLS service charge of ₹1,800 per applicant, GST included. The INR figure tracks the euro rate and changes monthly, so verify the live amount on blsspainvisa.com before paying. A fee table written for another country's counter is a fee table for another country.
Buy your flight tickets first — it shows the consulate you're serious.
Reality The checklist asks for a round-trip flight reservation, not a purchased ticket — and explicitly: do not buy tickets until the visa is issued. A non-refundable fare attached to a refused file is the most expensive way ever devised to look "serious". A proper flight itinerary for a Schengen file satisfies the requirement and keeps your money out of the fire.
Park a big amount in your account the week before applying.
Reality That deposit is a named red flag. Spain wants your original, bank-stamped statement for the last 3 months showing sufficient, stable funds, backed by two years of ITR — and a sudden large unexplained credit is listed among the common refusal grounds. A modest balance held steadily reads better than a big number that arrived on Tuesday.
Any travel insurance will do — it's just a formality.
Reality The policy must cover a minimum of €30,000, be valid across all Schengen states for the entire trip, and include repatriation — and it is checked at submission. A file without compliant insurance is rejected. This is the least glamorous document in the folder and one of the most common reasons a Spanish tourist file dies at the counter.
You can book whichever BLS centre suits your travel plans.
Reality You apply at the centre serving your state of residence — India is split between the Embassy of Spain (New Delhi) zone and the Consulate General (Mumbai) zone, and applying in the wrong jurisdiction is itself a listed refusal ground. There are twelve BLS Spain centres: New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Pune, Jalandhar, Kochi and Goa. Punjab readers: Jalandhar and Chandigarh are your counters, and the Delhi Embassy is your decision desk.
A Spain visa only lets you visit Spain.
Reality A Schengen visa issued by Spain is valid across the Schengen countries for the stay printed on the sticker — France, Italy, Germany, Portugal included. The real rule runs the other way: Spain must be your main destination, the country where you spend the most nights. Equal nights everywhere? Then you apply to the country of first entry. Applying to Spain for a holiday that is mostly Paris is the mismatch consulates are trained to spot.
The actual numbers, on one board
Since myth #2 is about wrong numbers, here are the right ones — per applicant, as they stand in 2026:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Schengen visa fee — adult (12+)€90, collected in INR at the consular rate; verify live on blsspainvisa.com | ₹8,300 |
| Schengen visa fee — child 6 to under 12€45 reduced rate | ₹4,150 |
| Schengen visa fee — child under 6 | FREE |
| BLS International service chargePer applicant, inclusive of GST; optional extras (courier, SMS, lounge) cost more | ₹1,800 |
Everything on that board is non-refundable regardless of the decision. Add mandatory insurance and your reservations, and the honest pre-flight total for a family is worth calculating properly — the Spain visa cost calculator does it for your exact family size in under a minute.
On timing: standard processing is 15 calendar days, stretching to 30–45 in peak season (April–September) or when the consulate wants more documents. You can apply at the earliest 6 months before travel and at the latest 15 calendar days before — the workable middle is at least 3 weeks ahead, with your file complete before you book the BLS slot, because peak-season appointments go fast.
Rapid-fire: the questions behind the myths
Does Spain use VFS Global in India?
No. Spain's visa applications in India are handled by BLS International on behalf of the Embassy of Spain in New Delhi and the Consulate General of Spain in Mumbai. You book and submit at a BLS Spain centre — there is no VFS counter for Spain in India.
How much does the Spain tourist visa cost from India in 2026?
The Schengen fee is €90, collected in rupees at the consular exchange rate — around ₹8,300 for adults, ₹4,150 for children 6–12, free under 6 — plus the BLS service charge of ₹1,800 per applicant. The INR amount changes with the euro rate, so confirm the live figure on blsspainvisa.com before paying. All fees are non-refundable whatever the outcome.
How long does Spain visa processing take from India?
Standard processing is 15 calendar days from submission. In peak season, or if the consulate requests additional documents, it can extend to 30–45 days. Apply at least three weeks before travel, and no later than 15 calendar days before departure.
Where are the BLS Spain visa centres in India?
Twelve cities: New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Pune, Jalandhar, Kochi and Goa. You must use the centre serving your state of residence — New Delhi Embassy jurisdiction or Mumbai Consulate jurisdiction. Applying in the wrong zone is a listed refusal ground.
Do I need to give biometrics again if I gave them for an earlier Schengen visa?
Fingerprints and photo are captured at the BLS centre, and biometrics remain valid for 59 months. If you gave them for a Schengen application within that window, you may be exempt from giving them again. First-time Schengen applicants must appear in person.
How much bank balance do I need for a Spain tourist visa?
Spain doesn't publish a single magic number for tourists — it expects sufficient, stable funds in your original 3-month bank-stamped statement to cover accommodation, daily expenses and return travel, supported by two years of ITR. Stability matters as much as size: a sudden large deposit just before applying is a known red flag.
Should I buy flight tickets before my Spain visa is approved?
No. Submit a round-trip reservation, not a purchased ticket — the checklist says so explicitly. Buy the actual fares only after the visa is in your passport; a refusal with non-refundable tickets attached turns a fee-sized setback into a holiday-sized one.

Fact-checker's notes. Compiled July 2026 from the Spain short-stay checklist as published via BLS International (blsspainvisa.com) and the Embassy of Spain, New Delhi. Rupee figures track the consular euro exchange rate and are revised monthly — verify the live amounts before paying.
This article is for information only and does not guarantee a visa. Every application is assessed on its own merits, and the final decision rests solely with the Embassy of Spain, New Delhi or the Consulate General of Spain, Mumbai — BLS International has no role in approvals or refusals.
