USA B1/B2 visa from India

Bring your parents to the USA from India

Parents visit on the B-2 visitor visa, and the US decides it differently from the other three countries: your parents are judged on their own ties to India at an interview, not on your guarantees. That changes what you should send. Here is what helps, what your parents prepare, and the order of the steps.

Fee checked on 26 Oct 2026. State Department guidance quoted from travel.state.gov as published in July 2026.

The visa your parents use

B-2 visitor visa

  • Stays of up to 6 months per entry, decided by the officer at the US border
  • Usually 10-year multiple entry for Indian nationals, case by case
  • An in-person interview at the US Embassy in New Delhi for Punjab applicants

Questions

Do I need to file an affidavit of support for my parents?

No. The State Department says a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed for a visitor visa and is not one of the factors in the decision. Your parents qualify on their own ties to India. If you pay part of the trip, they may show evidence of that.

My parents are over 80. Do they still need an interview?

Generally yes. From 1 October 2025 the State Department ended the age-based interview waiver: applicants over 79 now usually attend in person. A parent renewing a full-validity B1/B2 visa within 12 months of its expiry may still qualify for a waiver.
