Jurisdiction Notice — Germany Schengen Visa
All Germany Schengen visa applications accepted in India are forwarded to the German Consulate General, Mumbai, for decision — but you must apply at the VFS Application Centre that matches your place of habitual residence. Choosing the wrong jurisdiction means your appointment is cancelled and the application is refused at the counter.

The Germany Internship / Fellowship Visa (Schengen Type C) is for Indian interns and fellowship recipients doing short-term paid or observational engagements at German companies / institutions. Internships are legally considered 'work' and almost always require Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) pre-approval.

Embassy fees are set in EUR by the German Consulate General, Mumbai — the INR charged at VFS varies with the daily exchange rate. The Schengen visa fee is €90 per adult (€45 for children aged 6–12, free under 6), charged in INR — INR 10,100 per adult from 27 August 2026 for all cities. VFS service charge of ₹2,022 (inclusive of CGST 9% + SGST 9%) is fixed. Fees are payable in Cash / Visa / Mastercard / Amex / Rupay / Demand Draft (in favour of VFS Global Services Pvt. Ltd) / UPI. All visa fees, VFS service charges, and value-added service fees are non-refundable regardless of visa outcome. Recipients of public German scholarships MAY be exempt from visa fee if scholarship details are submitted WITH the application.

Absolutely required for internships; missing = automatic rejection. Exemptions exist for students (see below) and GIZ programs.

Internships almost always need FEA approval — hosting company/institution must obtain this directly at Bundesagentur für Arbeit BEFORE you apply. Exemptions: Guest Scientist status (apply for that visa instead), students enrolled at German university, GIZ-organised programs.

Frequently asked
Internship (legal 'work') involves performing tasks and usually requires FEA approval. Fellowship / Hospitation is OBSERVATIONAL only — not legally 'work' and may not require FEA approval. The Consulate reviews actual activities to decide — mis-labelling is a rejection cause.
Almost always YES for internships. Exemptions: (1) academic degree holders doing research at German university / public research institute → apply for Guest Scientist visa instead. (2) Enrolled at a German university during the stay (submit confirmation). (3) Organised through GIZ for skilled workers / managers.
Double-check with them. If the Consulate decides approval was required and it's missing, your visa is refused and there may be legal consequences for the German host too. Get the exemption in writing from the FEA or GIZ.
The invitation must specifically describe: which patient contacts you'll have, which tasks you'll perform, whether any payment is received. Medical internships are under heightened scrutiny.
Accompanying family members MUST apply separately for Tourist visa — Internship visa does not have a dependant category.
Yes — public German scholarships (DAAD, Humboldt, Max Planck) may qualify for visa fee exemption if scholarship details are submitted WITH the application. Include amount, expenses covered, funding source upfront — refund is NOT granted for late submission.
