The visa is easy. The geography is the decision.
A Schengen visa issued by Belgium unlocks all 29 Schengen countries — so the interesting question is never "can I visit France too?" It's "should I apply through Belgium at all?"
That answer hangs on a single rule the consulates apply strictly: the main-destination rule. Get it right and Belgium is one of the most convenient bases in Europe for a Benelux or three-country trip. Get it wrong — apply through Belgium when you'll actually spend most nights in Paris — and you've applied at the wrong consulate, which sits on the published list of refusal grounds. Apply where you'll spend the most nights
Belgium must be your main destination — the country where you book the most nights — for a Belgium visa to be the correct choice. If your nights are split evenly with no clear leader, the tie-breaker is your country of first entry into the Schengen area.
This isn't a technicality the consulate overlooks. "Belgium marked as main destination but more nights booked elsewhere" is one of the exact reasons Belgian applications are refused. Count your nights before the consulate does — the arithmetic is the strategy.
Four itineraries, one question each: is Belgium the base?
Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp anchor five nights; a side trip to Amsterdam takes three; Luxembourg City closes the loop in two. Belgium clearly leads the night count, so it is unambiguously your main destination. Apply through Belgium. This is the itinerary the Belgian consulate is built for, and the one where a Belgium base is genuinely the smart move.
Six nights across Brussels and the Flemish cities, then a two-night Thalys dash to Paris. Even though France is the "bigger name", Belgium holds the nights — so Belgium is still your main destination. Apply through Belgium. The lesson: main destination is about where you sleep, not which city is more famous.
A week in Paris and the Loire, with two nights in Bruges tacked on. Belgium is a side stop here, not the base. Applying through Belgium would put "main destination mismatch" straight into your file. Apply through France. No amount of loving Belgium changes where your nights are — and the consulate reads the bookings, not the intentions.
Three, three and three — a genuine tie. Now the tie-breaker decides: whichever country you enter Schengen through first. Land in Brussels, and Belgium becomes the correct consulate. Land in Frankfurt, and it's Germany. Pick your entry point deliberately and the base follows.
Once Belgium is the base: how the application runs
Belgium is online-first via Visa on Web. You complete the Schengen form at visaonweb.diplomatie.be, print and sign it, then attend VFS in person for biometrics and file submission.
The slot-release quirk worth knowing
New VFS appointment slots for Belgium are released on the first Monday of each month for the East and North zones. That single detail rewards planning: have your Visa on Web form done and your folder ready before the release, so a slot becomes a booking, not a scramble.
The file, in one set
For short-stay applications, only one set of original documents is required. The core of it:
- Passport — 2 blank pages, valid 3+ months beyond your Schengen departure
- Two biometric photos, 35–45 mm, white background, face 70–80% of frame, under 6 months old
- Printed, signed Visa on Web form and a personal cover letter with itinerary and transport
- Flight reservation (do not buy tickets until the visa is issued) and accommodation proof for each Member State you visit

- Original bank statement, last 3 months, stamped and signed, plus ITR acknowledgments for the last 2 assessment years
Biometrics are captured in person unless you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months; children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints.

All fees are non-refundable regardless of outcome, and optional extras don't affect the decision or the timeline. Standard processing is around 15 calendar days from submission, extending to 30–45 days in individual cases or peak season. Apply up to 6 months ahead and at least 15 working days before travel. Can I visit France and the Netherlands on a Belgium tourist visa?
Yes — a Schengen Type C visa issued by Belgium is valid across all 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The condition is that Belgium must be your main destination, meaning the country where you book the most nights. If most of your nights are in France or the Netherlands, apply through that country instead.
How does the main-destination rule decide where I apply?
You apply through the country where you'll spend the most nights. If your nights are split evenly with no clear leader, the tie-breaker is your country of first entry into the Schengen area. What does a Belgium tourist visa cost from India in 2026?
The visa fee is €90, roughly ₹9,900 at the current exchange rate, plus a VFS service charge of ₹2,750 per application including GST. Children aged 6–12 pay €45 and children under 6 are exempt from the visa fee. All fees are non-refundable regardless of the decision, and the rupee amount moves with the exchange rate.
How long does a Belgium tourist visa take to process?
