Finland counts in working days — and that changes everything

Most Schengen embassies quote calendar days. Finland's estimate is up to 15 working days — and that one word quietly adds a week to your mental math.

Working days exclude weekends and Finnish and Indian public holidays. Fifteen working days is already three calendar weeks; drop a festival cluster into the middle — a Diwali week in India, midsummer or Christmas closures in Finland — and the same "15 days" stretches further. Groups of more than 15 people are quoted up to 20 working days, and in high season or individual cases the Embassy can extend processing to 30 days, request extra documents, or call an interview.

The application window opens 6 months before travel (9 months for seafarers on duty). That generous runway is Finland handing you the timing advantage — take it.

Six centres for all of India, and everyone attends in person

Finland runs Visa Application Centres in exactly six Indian cities: New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Compare that with the eleven-plus centres many Schengen states operate, and you see the strategic point: the appointment slot, not the paperwork, is often Finland's scarcest resource — especially in the weeks when everyone wants the same aurora dates.

Two rules sharpen the squeeze. First, every applicant attends in person — including children of all ages; there is no skip for infants. Second, biometrics (fingerprints plus photo) are captured for first-time applicants and for anyone whose previous Schengen fingerprints are older than 59 months. A family of four needs four seats at the counter, on the same day, in one of six cities. If you're travelling from Punjab or Gujarat, the trip to the VAC is part of your timeline too.

June and July trips collide with Finland's own holiday rhythm and Europe's tourist high season. The same backwards plan applies with one adjustment: treat minus 6 weeks as your latest sensible submission, and remember the group rule — a family circle or friends' trip filed as a group of 15+ is quoted 20 working days, not 15.

Whichever season: Finland must be your main destination — the Schengen country where you spend the most days. Splitting time equally across countries? Then the rule shifts to your first port of entry. Filing with the wrong embassy is an unforced error no timing can fix.

The insurance clause Finland actually checks

Finland's insurance rule is written with unusual precision, and files fail on the details. The policy must cover at least €30,000, be valid for the entire trip and the whole Schengen area — a "Finland only" policy is explicitly not accepted (worldwide cover is fine). It must cover every applicant, including children, and span sudden illness, accident, on-site assistance, medical repatriation and repatriation in case of death.
