Whether it's your parents coming for their first Swedish Christmas or you flying out to a cousin in Stockholm, this file has two halves — one written in Sweden, one in India. Here is how the halves meet, what everything costs, and when to apply so nobody misses the moment.
This is a two-household application
Most visa files are written by one person. The Sweden family-visit file is written by two — and the Embassy reads both halves as one story.
The Sweden visit visa for family and friends is a Schengen Short-Stay (Type C) visa: up to 90 days in any 180-day period, decided by the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi and submitted through VFS Global in India. What makes it different from a plain tourist application is the invitation machinery — your host in Sweden fills their own form, proves their own legal residence, and, if they're paying for the trip, proves their own finances too.
Done well, that machinery is a gift: a strong host file answers half the officer's questions before they're asked. Done sloppily — an invitation without the host's address, a missing residence-permit copy — it becomes the exact reason a loving, genuine visit gets refused. So let's set the table properly.
Half the papers come from Sweden, half from India
- Invitation letter — Form No. 241011 — with their full address, contact details and your exact dates of stay. If they're covering your costs, the form must say so.
- Proof of legal residence — a personbevis (population registration certificate), Swedish ID card, passport or naturalisation decision. If your host isn't a Swedish or EU national: a copy of their Swedish residence permit.
- Kinship proof — birth or marriage certificates, family book — whatever links you to them on paper.
- If they pay for your trip — their last three months' payslips, pension statements or bank statements.
- Schengen form No. 119031, completed and signed, plus one 35×45 mm white-background photo taken within the last six months.
- Passport valid at least 3 months beyond departure, 2 blank pages, issued within the last 10 years — plus all previous passports, whatever their condition.
- Bank statements for the last 3 months, stamped and signed by the bank, and Income Tax Returns for the last 2 assessment years.
- Status papers — payslips, employment contract and leave approval if employed; PAN and company registration if self-employed; pension statements if retired.
- Travel medical insurance — minimum €30,000, all Schengen countries, entire trip including arrival and departure dates, from an Embassy-approved insurer.
- Return-flight reservation — a reservation, not a purchased ticket.
The Embassy of Sweden does not accept affidavits as evidence — not for sponsorship, not for relationships. Original documents only. Half the weak files we rebuild leaned on an affidavit somewhere.
Staying with your family the whole trip? You don't need a hotel booking — proof of private accommodation from the host replaces it. If your itinerary mixes a week at your brother's flat with a weekend in another Schengen country, add the hotel booking and the intra-Schengen travel reservation for that leg. Winter visits, summer visits — the calendar does half the work
The rules first, because they're firm: you may apply up to 6 months before travel and no later than 15 calendar days before departure — submitting inside that 15-day window risks the application being rejected or written off. Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the day the file reaches the Embassy in New Delhi, and files submitted at VFS centres outside Delhi take roughly 2 extra days in postal transit. Peak seasons and requests for extra documents stretch it further.
Christmas markets, Lucia processions, snow the grandchildren have never touched. December travel means November–December processing — peak season on both the Embassy's desk and the airline's fare chart. Work backwards: for a mid-December arrival, aim to submit by late October. The 6-month window means you can file as early as mid-June.
Midsummer, long white evenings, the family cabin. June–July is Sweden at its warmest and its busiest. For a late-June arrival, a April–May submission gives the 15-day clock room to breathe, keeps bookings fresh, and leaves margin if the Embassy asks for one more paper.
One practical edge for anyone near Delhi: the Embassy's jurisdiction runs through VFS New Delhi, so filing there skips the ~2-day postal hop that Mumbai, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Goa, Kochi and the other centres add. Small, but when a grandchild's birthday is the deadline, small matters.
The bill, without surprises

So a realistic counter total for one adult is around ₹9,800–₹10,000 at current exchange rates, before insurance and optional services — and every rupee of it is non-refundable whatever the decision. A kindness in the rules for families: children aged 0–12 are biometric-exempt, so the little ones skip the fingerprint scanner entirely, and children under 6 skip the embassy fee too. Everyone still attends VFS in person, and every applicant — including the fee-exempt — pays the €19 service charge.
Say it in Form 241011, attach the host's three months of payslips or bank statements — and still show your own bank statement and ITRs where possible. "My son will cover everything" lands far better when your own papers show a stable life you're returning to.

How long does processing take for a Sweden visit visa?
Standard processing is 15 calendar days from the day the application reaches the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi. Files submitted at VFS centres outside New Delhi add roughly 2 days of postal transit, and peak season or requests for extra documents can stretch the timeline further. Apply between 6 months and 15 days before departure.
Do I need a hotel booking if I'm staying with my family?
No. If you stay with your host, proof of private accommodation from them replaces the hotel reservation. If part of your trip is spent elsewhere in the Schengen area, provide hotel bookings and travel reservations for those nights as well.
Can my son or daughter in Sweden pay for my whole trip?
Yes. The invitation must state that the host covers your costs, and the host should attach their last three months' payslips, pension statements or bank statements as proof. You should still submit your own bank statement and ITRs where possible — your own financial footing supports the case that you'll return home.
Do my grandchildren need to give fingerprints too?
No — children aged 0–12 on the date of submission are biometric-exempt, and children under 6 are exempt from the embassy fee as well. Every applicant, children included, still attends the VFS appointment in person and pays the €19 service charge.
Is travel insurance really mandatory for a family visit?
Yes, without exception. The policy must cover at least €30,000 across all Schengen countries for the entire trip — including the arrival and departure dates — for accident, illness, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, and it must come from an Embassy-approved insurer. A non-compliant policy makes the whole file incomplete.
Should I buy flight tickets before the visa is approved?
No. The Embassy asks for a return-flight reservation, not a purchased ticket — do not buy the actual fare until the visa is in the passport. Pair it with refundable hotel bookings where you're not staying with family, so a delay or refusal doesn't burn real money.
