UK Visitor Visa 2026: The 6-Month Field Manual
Last reviewed: 15 July 2026 · Verified against current VFS Global India fees
A field manual for the UK Standard Visitor visa from India: numbered kit lists, the T-minus timeline, and the hazards that sink files. £135.

The UK visitor visa: a six-month field manual.
The UK Standard Visitor visa is decided on paper, in about three weeks, by an officer you will never meet. This manual treats the application the way it deserves: kit lists, a timeline, and the hazards marked in red. £135 buys you up to six months in the UK — if the file holds.
Know the visa before you pack the kit
One visa class covers tourism, family visits and business: the Standard Visitor visa. Up to 6 months per visit. £135 — roughly ₹14,300 — paid online. Decision usually within 3 weeks of biometrics.
Three operational facts shape everything below. First: you apply online at GOV.UK — a form of roughly 80 questions — then attend a VFS Global centre in India only for biometrics; your passport is returned the same day. Second: the UK now issues digital eVisas — no sticker ever goes in your passport; after approval you create a UKVI account to access it. Third: UKVI applies a genuine visitor test — are you a real visitor, funded for the trip, who will leave at the end of the stay? Every document in this manual exists to answer that one question.
The earliest you can apply is 3 months before travel. If you are frequently in and out of the UK, long-term visitor visas exist — 2 years at £506, 5 years at £903, 10 years at £1,128 — all still capped at 6 months per visit. Full mechanics live in our UK tourist visa guide; the strategy and refusal patterns are on the UK visitor visa from India page.
The kit lists
Four kits. Pack them in this order. Items marked REQ are load-bearing; items marked ADV are advisable and frequently decisive.
- Passport req — valid for the whole of your stay, at least one blank page.
- Photograph req — 45 × 35 mm, white background, taken within 6 months; uploaded digitally in the online application.
- Cover letter req — purpose, duration, cities, accommodation, and an explicit line confirming you will return to India.
- TB test certificate adv — mandatory only if visiting 6+ months; use an IOM-approved clinic in India.
- Bank statements, last 6 months req — stamped and signed, showing enough to cover the whole trip. Working planning figure: £50–100 per day of stay.
- Income Tax Returns, last 3 years req — your income must explain your balance. Mismatch between the two is a named refusal ground.
- Sponsor documents adv — if a UK relative funds you: their letter of sponsorship, bank statements and employment letter, consistent with your own file.
- Employed — salary slips (3 months) + leave approval letter.
- Self-employed — GST certificate, company registration, ITRs.
- Retired — pension statements.
- Student — enrolment letter + leave approval.
- Everyone — property papers and family commitments in India strengthen return intent.
- Invitation letter adv — UK address, relationship, visit dates. Not mandatory, consistently helpful. Drafting rules are in our UK invitation letter guide.
- Host's passport / BRP / visa copy adv — their immigration status must be clear; an unclear host status is a listed refusal reason.
- Host's address proof adv — utility bill or council tax.
Submit a round-trip flight reservation and hotel bookings — do not purchase tickets until the visa is granted. A refused file attached to non-refundable Heathrow fares is an expensive way to learn the difference between a booking and a purchase.
T-minus 90 to decision
You can apply up to 3 months before travel. Sensible launch window: 4–6 weeks out — buffer for processing, plus room for the priority option if things get tight.
Get statements stamped and signed at the branch, collect the leave letter, brief the UK host. Every document should tell the same story: same dates, same funder, same purpose.
Roughly 80 questions; save progress as you go. Pay by international card — the INR figure follows the day's exchange rate. Then book biometrics at a VFS UK centre: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Pune or Jalandhar.
Carry passport, printed confirmation and supporting documents. Fingerprints and photo taken; passport handed back the same day — the UK decision arrives digitally.
Priority service (~5 working days) and Super Priority (next working day) exist at extra cost. Neither improves your odds — they only compress the calendar.
Create your UKVI account to access the digital eVisa. Airlines and UK Border Force verify electronically. Now — and only now — buy the flights.
Six hazards that sink UK files
- Bank statement red flags. Large unexplained deposits, borrowed "show money", or a balance your income cannot explain. UKVI reads statements closely — six consistent months plus a documented source for anything unusual is the fix.
- Failing the genuine-visitor test. The officer doubts you will leave. Countered with strong ties (Kit 03), a realistic itinerary, and finances that fit a temporary visit.
- Weak financial evidence. Funds that do not cover the declared trip at £50–100/day. Budget the trip honestly and show money that matches it.
- Pattern of long UK stays. Living in the UK through frequent, successive visits is not allowed on a visitor visa — the pattern itself draws refusals or cancellation.
- Undisclosed previous refusals. Any country, ever. Disclose and explain; concealment is discovered and remembered.
- Unclear host status. A sponsor whose own immigration position is vague weakens the file. The host pack in Kit 04 closes this.
Standard Visitor refusals cannot be appealed — the only path is a fresh application that answers the refusal letter point by point. The fee is not refunded. That is the practical case for filing a complete, consistent file the first time; our filing service is ₹14,999 all-in, itemised on the pricing page.
FAQ — straight answers
How many months of bank statements does the UK visitor visa need?
Usually the last 6 months, stamped and signed by the bank. UKVI wants a stable balance consistent with your declared income — not a lump sum that appeared just before you applied. Plan around £50–100 per day of stay as a working figure.
What is the genuine visitor test?
UKVI must be satisfied you genuinely intend to visit, can fund the trip, will not work illegally, and will leave at the end of your stay. Strong ties to India and credible, consistent finances are how you pass it. Every kit in this manual feeds that assessment.
How early can I apply for a UK visitor visa?
Up to 3 months before your travel date. Decisions usually arrive within 3 weeks of biometrics, so applying 4–6 weeks out is the comfortable window. Priority (~5 working days) and Super Priority (next working day) services cost extra.
Do I need a TB test for a UK visitor visa?
Only if you are visiting for more than 6 months — then it is mandatory, from an IOM-approved clinic in India. Standard visits of up to 6 months do not require it.
Do I need a sponsor for my UK visit?
Not necessarily. If you fund the trip yourself with sufficient, consistent funds, no sponsor is needed. If a UK relative supports you, submit a complete host pack — their letter, status proof, accommodation and finances — matching your application.
Will I get a visa sticker in my passport?
No. The UK issues digital eVisas — after approval you create a UKVI account to access yours. Your passport is returned the same day as biometrics, and airlines verify your status electronically.
Can I appeal if my UK visitor visa is refused?
No — Standard Visitor refusals carry no appeal right. You reapply with a file that answers the refusal letter's stated reasons directly. Our refusal-rebuild work starts from that letter, not from a fresh template.
Is the 2, 5 or 10-year visitor visa worth it?
If you visit the UK regularly, yes: 2-year £506, 5-year £903, 10-year £1,128. Each visit is still capped at 6 months, and the genuine-visitor rules apply on every entry — long-term validity is convenience, not immunity.
Have the kit inspected before UKVI inspects it.
