Indian citizens generally do NOT need a Hungary airport transit visa. This page is for information only — it covers the Bangladesh / Sri Lanka national rule. Indian travellers transiting through Budapest typically need only a regular Schengen Type C if leaving the airport, OR no visa at all if remaining airside on a same-airline / same-day connection.

Hungary processes Indian applications through TWO offices: the Embassy in New Delhi for north India, and the Consulate General in Mumbai for south & west (Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Cochin, Pune, Goa, Puducherry, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad). Submit to the wrong one and your file is returned without a decision. All applications go via VFS Joint Visa Application Centre.

Visa fees are set by the Embassy of Hungary in INR and are non-refundable regardless of outcome. Children under 6 are visa-fee-exempt; school pupils, students, postgraduates, researchers attending scientific events, family members of EU/EEA citizens, and accompanying teachers may also be visa-fee-exempt — confirm at submission. Diplomatic and service passport holders are exempt from the visa fee. Long-term D visas carry a separate ₹1,920 biometrics service charge on top of the visa fee.

The Hungary consulate wants a return itinerary with a real PNR covering your exact dates. It does not want a paid ticket, and buying one before a decision puts your money at risk for nothing.
Where people slip: Flying into one city and out of another with nothing showing how you travel between them. Officers read the whole route, and an unexplained gap reads as a plan that does not hold together.
How to hold a flight without payingHotel booking
Accommodation for EVERY night of the stay. Not most nights — every one. A gap is a documented refusal ground under the Schengen code.
Where people slip: Free-cancellation bookings are accepted, but if the entire file is free-cancellation the officer sees a trip nobody has committed to. Some of it should be real spend.
Refundable hotel booking, explainedTravel insurance
Minimum EUR 30,000 medical cover, valid in every Schengen state, including repatriation and emergency medical evacuation, for the full period of stay. Regulation (EC) 810/2009 — this is law, not preference.
Where people slip: Buying cover for the adults and forgetting the children. Every traveller needs their own EUR 30,000, infants included — a real refusal we have seen on a family of four.
