Lithuania Study / Research / Internship Visa (Schengen Short-Stay, Type C)

Foreign nationals admitted or registered at a Lithuanian educational establishment for short-term academic, vocational, training, or research courses can apply for a Schengen Type C visa for study, research, or other types of internship. Valid up to 90 days within any 180-day period. For programmes longer than 90 days — full degrees, multi-year research stays, exchanges over a semester — applicants need a Long-Stay D Visa instead (not on this site; ask us by phone).

Lithuania — Schengen member · Embassy New Delhi · MIGRIS portal is the form

One Lithuania visa = all 29 Schengen countries. But you must apply through MIGRIS — not the standard VFS form.

All India applications are decided by the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania, New Delhi through VFS Lithuania centres. The Lithuanian government runs its own electronic immigration portal at migracija.lt/en — every applicant creates a MIGRIS login, picks their nationality, and fills the Schengen visa form there. The standard VFS application form does not work for Lithuania. For business / sponsored visits, the Lithuanian host also submits a MIGRIS invitation letter that the applicant references in their file.

29 Schengen countries

Full Schengen member — Lithuania visa unlocks the whole zone, not just Lithuania.

Embassy New Delhi only

All India files decided by Embassy of Lithuania, New Delhi via VFS centres.

15 calendar days (up to 30)

Apply 6 months before / no later than 15 working days before travel. Satellite VFS adds 2-3 days transit to Delhi.

The MIGRIS rule (the form that gets it right)

  1. Open migracija.lt/en and create your MIGRIS login.
  2. Pick India as nationality, then choose Schengen visa application form. Fill, print, sign.
  3. If you have a Lithuanian inviter (business, family, friends, employer, organisation), ask them to file a MIGRIS invitation letter first — you reference it in your application instead of attaching a hand-signed letter.
  4. Then book your VFS appointment, attend in person, pay the visa fee + VFS service charge in cash / card / UPI / DD.

Two gotchas Indian sites get wrong: (1) Affidavits are NOT accepted as evidence by the Embassy of Lithuania — substituting an affidavit for a proper bank certificate, ITR, or property registry will get the file rejected. (2) Family members of Lithuanian citizens pay €0 visa fee — but you need the marriage / birth certificate notarised AND an extract from the Lithuanian population register (Gyventojų registras). Indian-citizen marriage certificate alone is not enough.

Diplomatic passport holders: visa-exempt for Lithuania under the bilateral India-Lithuania agreement (Official Delegations). Stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period — no application needed.

Note: SureshotVisa handles the 10 Lithuania Schengen Short-Stay (Type C) categories listed below — Tourism, Business, Study/Internship, Visiting Family/Friends, Cultural & Sports, Official Delegations, Medical Treatment, Seafarer (informational), Airport Transit, and Family Members of EU/EEA/CH citizens — end-to-end through VFS. Long-Stay D visas (work / study / residence permit) are not on this site yet; ask us by phone if you need one and we'll quote separately.

Special Instructions — Read Before Applying

These requirements apply to ALL Lithuania visa types. Violations mean your application will be rejected — read each one carefully.

  • 1Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania, New Delhi processes ALL India applications. Single jurisdiction across India.
  • 2MIGRIS APPLICATION FORM IS MANDATORY: every applicant must create a MIGRIS login at migracija.lt/en, pick nationality from the list, and fill the Schengen visa application form. The generic VFS form does not work — files using the wrong form get rejected at counter.
  • 3MIGRIS INVITATION LETTER: for Business, Visiting Family/Friends (when an invitation is relied upon), Cultural / Sports / Religious events, Medical Treatment, and Seafarer applications, the Lithuanian host (employer / inviting person / organisation / shipping company) must file the invitation through MIGRIS first. The applicant references it in their application.
  • 4AFFIDAVITS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED as documents of evidence by the Embassy of Lithuania — substituting an affidavit for proper bank certificates, ITR, employment letters, or property registry will get the file rejected.
  • 5FAMILY MEMBERS OF LITHUANIAN CITIZENS pay €0 visa fee — but need notarised marriage certificate / birth certificate AND extract from the Lithuanian population register (Gyventojų registras).
  • 6DIPLOMATIC PASSPORT HOLDERS are visa-EXEMPT for Lithuania under the bilateral India-Lithuania agreement (Official Delegations) — stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without visa.
  • 7Photo specification: 35mm × 45mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm), high-definition colour, white background, face covering at least 80% of the frame, no more than 6 months old, ICAO compliant. No headgear (except religious — chin/nose/eyes/eyebrows must be visible). No hair tucked behind ears. No staple marks. Scanned and colour photocopies are NOT accepted.
  • 8Travel medical insurance: €30,000 minimum coverage, valid for ALL Schengen countries, covering accident / illness / medical emergency evacuation / repatriation. Must cover the entire trip including arrival and departure dates. Multi-entry visa applicants must have insurance for the duration of the first trip. NOT obligatory for Family Members of EU/EEA/CH citizens (Directive 2004/38/EC).
  • 9Indian passport must be issued within the last 10 years, valid 3 months beyond intended Schengen departure, with at least 2 blank pages. Submit current passport biodata page + last page (for Indian passports) + entry/exit Schengen stamps from previous passports if available.
  • 10Apply not earlier than 6 months before intended travel and NOT LATER THAN 15 working days before. Non-Delhi VFS centres add 2–3 days transit to the Embassy.
  • 11A booked flight ticket does NOT result in preferred processing. Submission of incomplete documentation may result in rejection — the visa section is not obliged to ask for missing documents before denying. Applicants do NOT have their passport in their possession during processing.
  • 12Indian Income Tax Return (ITR) acknowledgments are mandatory: last 2 assessment years.

  1. 01

Confirm Lithuania is your main Schengen destination

Apply via Lithuania if your itinerary spends most time (or has its main purpose) there. If splitting time evenly between Schengen states, apply through the country of first entry.

  2. 02

Create a MIGRIS login at migracija.lt/en

Open the Lithuanian government's electronic immigration portal at migracija.lt/en, pick India from the nationality list, then select the Schengen visa application form. Fill, print, sign. This is the only application form that works — generic VFS forms get rejected at counter.

  3. 03

Get a MIGRIS invitation letter (where required)

For Business / Visiting Family-Friends (when relying on an invitation) / Cultural-Sports / Medical Treatment / Seafarer categories, the Lithuanian host files the invitation letter through MIGRIS. You reference it in your application — no hand-signed letter needed.

  4. 04

    Book your VFS appointment online

After completing the MIGRIS form, book at visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/ltu/. Pay VFS service charge in cash / card / UPI / DD at the centre.

Attend with your printed MIGRIS form, all documents, and two ICAO-compliant photos. Pay the visa fee. Biometrics are captured at the centre. Affidavits are NOT accepted as evidence.

  6. 06

Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania, New Delhi decides. Up to 30 days if additional information / interview requested. Non-Delhi VFS centres add 2–3 days postal transit. Track via VFS website.

  7. 07

    Collect your passport from VFS

Once notified, collect from VFS or use courier. Verify visa validity dates, entry type, and stay duration before leaving the counter.

What works

4 levers that flip a borderline case.

  • If your course is longer than 90 days, do NOT apply for Type C — call us to arrange the Long-Stay D Student Visa instead.
  • Erasmus+ short-mobility participants typically use the Schengen Type C — get the host institution's certificate of admission early.
  • Course fees + accommodation arrangements should be visible in the MIGRIS application — gives the visa officer a complete picture.
  • Internships: the cover letter from the Lithuanian company is just as important as the admission certificate. Both confirm purpose independently.

What kills cases

Top 3 refusal triggers we see.

  • 1Course duration exceeds 90 days but Type C applied for instead of D
  • 2Admission letter missing course start/end dates
  • 3Wrong application form (generic VFS instead of MIGRIS)

Do I need IELTS for a Lithuania study visa?+
Lithuanian universities set their own English-language requirements (IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo English Test). The visa application doesn't need a language test — but the admission letter does. Check the institution's requirements before paying course fees.
Can SureshotVisa help with Lithuania study visas?+
Yes for the Schengen Type C (short courses, internships, exchanges up to 90 days). For full-degree D Visas, ask us by phone — we'll quote separately.
